Flash Drive Died on me

Featured Replies

Hi there, I've replied to the original email sent to me by Tom asking for a new reg key for my replacement flash drive (GUID provided).

I would like to know if this is the right thing to do, or if there is anything else I need to provide.

Also, what time is "working time" over there? o.O I'm waiting eagerly for my new key since my unraid box will be unusable until I get it.

Registration woes  :'(

save yourself the wait and buy yourself a usb card reader, the guid is then tied to the card reader and NOT the card in the card reader, so when the card fails/wears out you just replace the card and your up and running :-), lots of people are using the Kingston MobileLiteG2 - Card reader (including myself).

thanks for the tip but I don't know if I'd go to that extent...

If a staff member could reply promptly with a new serial that's fine, i don't mind using the system the way it is now but it would be nice if it could be optimized.

Otherwise a way to manage one's own guid's online perhaps, so that if you would like to change your device you can just de-activate the old guid and activate your new one.

I wouldn't know where to find a "USB3 card reader" in my area, i have a usb 3 flash drive atm which is nice and fast, so I wouldn't want to drop down to USB2.

I also hope that flash drive reliability isn't so bad that I would have to really go to such great lengths to avoid downtime :/ maybe i'm being naive.

Anyway thanks again for the comment, here's hoping Tom gets the email soon and replies.

Regards, Nokoff

The problem there is that unraid does not go online to check your guid, so the de-activated id would still work. That's fine if the device is really and truly dead, but dishonest people would just start activating guid's to steal the use of the software. If Tom suspects a guid is being used improperly, he can blacklist it in future releases, but that's a pain for him to keep up to date, and unnecessary work. Going to an online activation scheme is possible, but I for one would not trust my data to a program that required internet access in order to run.

Tom's current method works for him, sometimes the customer just has to be a little bit more patient. He also steeply discounts the second license to be used for a backup USB stick, that way there is no down time.

ni nokoff, i think you will typically have to wait 48 hours for tom to generate you a new licence key, which is pretty quick.

my main concern is around the doomsday scenario of what if limetech goes under, or stops supporting version 5.x and thus no new keys are generated, i personally don't want to get to a situation where im reliant on one person generating a new key for me for me to carry on using software ive paid for (no disrespect meant to tom here!), so for me being able to just replace a failed boot drive without the requirement to generate a new key is the way i want to work, im sure some people would call me paranoid, but hey thats the way i am, please ignore me :-).

on your other point regards the card reader being usb2 not usb3, this really makes little to no difference, as once the server is booted the os and all packages are in memory in any case so there is little to no reading/writing from the boot device, your server may boot 5-10 seconds quicker than mine but how often do you boot your server? :-)

reliability of usb keys/cards is pretty good if you buy a good brand, however they do have a finite number of reads and writes and WILL become unusable in time, the amount of time depends on number of packages/plugins/scripts etc that need to be read at boot.

the usb card reader method doesnt work for everybody. Some systems don't play well with it (mine for example). MobileLiteG3 for sale!!! lol.

you tried the G2?, thats the one i have, don't know if it will play nicely with your mobo though?

If you used the G3 that might be why it didn't work.  I have NO problem on any box I've tried with my G2 and USB2.0 port.
