CrashPlan GUI access / Run Windows under ESXi?

Featured Replies

Crashplan 3.5.3 is running flawlessly on my v5 final server, but the interface I have currently set up requires a Windows install of CrashPlan, an SSH putty connection to unRaid, and then it can be monitored / managed from a Windows PC running the Crashplan client.  This is long winded and complicated, and it would be nice to just have access to the crashplan gui without all the putty stuff.  I haven't tried the plugin gui for unRaid yet but am just setting up an ESXi box and wondered if this might be even better?

Has anyone set up a virtual Windows ESXi instance for this purpose?  Could I have crashplan running on just the Windows instance and not even need to install Crashplan on unRaid?  Both unRaid and a Windows instance running CrashPlan would be on the same box.  This way the client and backup should all be in one place, and no putty required.  The Windows instance would just be for running CrashPlan on my unRaid box.  (presently have close to 1tb up on CrashPlan Central)

This would allow me to run my unRaid with no plugins or addons at all...

I'm guessing this isn't been done too many times. I know I've had my Windows client set up to back up unRaid, and this works fine so it should work on ESXi too.

If it works on your Windows box, it will work fine on a Windows VM under ESXi.    It's simply another Windows PC for all intents and purposes.

I have a little application that I use to do all the changes needed to get the Windows GUI connected to the server instance.  When i get some time to clean up the code I will see about posting it.
