September 17, 201312 yr looking to know what streaming playing to purchase. A simple to use streaming player for use with unraid (serving the videos) and plex (i have it running on the same VM as unraid). Has to be wife /children friendly. Easy to use ,either select thumbnails and hit the play button. cheap but not too cheap. have been looking at the roku boxes (any good?) thanks in advance! nick
September 17, 201312 yr If you are in the uk, get one or more nowTV boxes for 10ukp each. They are based on the rokuLT. You can then enter developer mode, load the roku plex app and away you go!. You might want to block updates at the router level so that developer mode doesn't get disabled. Working really well on my system Tony
September 17, 201312 yr I have an Apple TV (version 2) that I jailbreaked to run PLEX, works great. Don't think version 3 has been hacked yet though
September 17, 201312 yr WDTV Live if you want something preconfigured and ready to go or OpenELEC if you're willing to do an HTPC. The HTPC will be a bit more expensive. An Intel NUC or Zotac Zbox (or similar) are mostly prebuilt and make good HTPCs. OpenELEC is very appliance-like, but may need a small amount of initial tinkering to get it set up to your liking.
September 18, 201312 yr I've had great luck with the roku boxes and plex. Got 5 of them running now, a roku 3 and 2xs local and a pair of 2 lt's and a old gen 1 running remote at my parents house. It doesn't get any simpler on the client end.
September 18, 201312 yr I've used a WDTV, WDTV Live, XBMC, Openelec on RPi and Roku 3 ..XS? Out of those the WDTV is my favorite for a standalone out of the box player (both versions are good), XBMC or Openelec otherwise, I don't have much experience with Plex sorry. The Roku is terrible for accessing drives connected by USB but works pretty well for Netflix which was the main reason we got it. Now using a PS3 for Netflix though and it does a better job.. I'm not even sure if our Roku can access SMB shares, my unRAID server is back in Aus :-( Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
