Version 5 RC Pros / Cons?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Lots of info on the forum about 4.7 -> 5.0 rc

as I understand it these are the pros and cons:

pros:

use 3TB and larger drives

cons:

no unmenu

no auto UPS shutdown via unmenu

reduced stability?

Looks like these cons are BS based on replies  :)

9/30/13 These cons are complete BS based on upgrade experience  :D

Are these correct & am I missing any pros / cons?

cheers - paul

5.0 has gone final.  You can add unmenu, and there's a plugin for apcupsd. 5.0 has been stable for lots of users.

Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos.

no auto UPS shutdown via unmenu - the unMenu package and the plugin version both work

reduced stability? - Where are you getting this from?  Since unRAID v5rc12a everything has been very stable for me.  For some/most a lot of the 5.0rc releases have been stable.

Sureguy & Prostuff1 thanks for the great replies! I'm delighted. Looks like I totally got the wrong impression about V5.

thanks again  :) paul

I certainly agree v5 seems very stable so far -- I've got one server on v4.7 and one on v5.0, plus a couple test units on v5.0 that I frequently reload and do various tests on (trying to replicate issues folks report here).

However, there is one thing I like about v4.7 with regards to stability =>  if emhttp (the Web GUI) stops responding, you can restart it with a few simple command line entries on v4.7, but cannot do that on v5.0 (it tends to generate segfaults).

Nevertheless, I'll probably update my v4.7 to 5.0 the next time it shuts down due to an extended power failure.    Meanwhile, it's so reliable I'm not inclined to do so  :)

I have been using 5x since RC-8.  It has been stable for me.  I am currently on RC16, been too lazy to update to 5.0 final.  I should just do it as its a simple copy and paste.

v5 has been very stable for me as well -- although I did have the Web GUI stop responding once, and had to reboot to restore it, since you can't restart it.    There are a lot of question on this forum regarding the same issue -- thus my note r.e. emhttp.

I agree, by the way, you should go ahead and upgrade to v5.0

I've just had this issue as well. Stopped responding via unRAID, but still available through unMenu. But then that stopped responding as well, so a reboot was in order. Thankfully I run mine with keybd and monitor, so could shut it down with ctrl/alt/del

Guys,

I took your great advice, upgraded to V5.0, & replaced my parity disk with a 3 GB drive. Unmenu is working fine as is the UPS interface. I'm currently doing a parity check in preparation for replacing one of my smaller drives with the old parity drive. I looks like parity checking is quite a bit slower than V4.7 and file access during the check is sluggish. I'll check the forum for similar comments & ideas.

Bottom line easy move to V5 & thanks for the helpful comments.  :)

cheers - paul
