September 28, 201312 yr I set a 50 gig minimum, and it's still copying to the entire disk, here are some pictures in case I am not explaining it correctly. I appreciate all the help. -Semper Fi gyrene2083
September 28, 201312 yr You do not mention the path of the files causing the problem. It may be your split level setting that is constraining the files in question to a particular drive.
September 28, 201312 yr Author Thank you itimpi, I apologize for not giving enough information. Here is a snippet of the log file where the drive is full... I deleted that before, but I guess I didn't delete it off of the cache drive. Would deleting it from the cache drive stop it from copying over and filling up the 2nd hard drive? -Semper Fi gyrene2083
September 28, 201312 yr With a split level of 2 the "TV Shows Backup" and anything it contains is constrained to the disk on which the "TV Shows Backup" folder is created. Deleting from the "media" share should also remove it from the cache drive as the share gives a consolidated view that includes the cache drive.
September 28, 201312 yr Author So, maybe I have things screwed up because here is my directory structure Media -Movies ---Movie Folder -------Movie files -TV Shows ---TV Show Folder -------TV Show files -Anime (same as above) -Boxing (same as above) -Backups (several different folders and subfolders) So would split level 2 not be the correct setting? Thanks again for all the help. -Semper Fi gyren2083
September 28, 201312 yr There is no 'right' answer as it depends on your requirements. However split level 2 looks to be a reasonable value. The path that is being complained about does not conform to your pattern which might be why you were having problems.
September 28, 201312 yr Author Well then thank you so much for all your input, and help. I will stick with split level 2 as I deleted the other files off of the cache drive, and things appear to be back to normal so far. If you have any more advice, or input, I would tremendously appreciate it. -Semper Fi gyrene2083
September 28, 201312 yr 2 is correct for Movies but I doubt it's ideal for the other types of media. Is there a reason why you can't create multiple shares each with a distinct split level? Otherwise, consider the ideal level for each of your data types and choose the highest value. Then you will need to add padding directories to make everything else work. E.g. lets say 4 is ideal for the Backups; so adding 2 padding directories to Movies gets the desired behavior for the Movies, i.e., /Media/movies/movies/Movies/Movie Folder.
September 28, 201312 yr Author Thanks for the the input dgaschk. So, here are all the folders I have under the Media Share; Media - Movies Movie Folder (2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) 720p BluRay) Movie Files (2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) 720p BluRay.mkv) TV Shows TV Show Folder (Homeland (2011)) TV Show Files (Homeland.mkv) So the media share is set with a split level 2. So I should have another Share setup for backups with a split level of 4? That sound right? -Semper FI gyrene2083
October 1, 201312 yr All mkv means that the split level is less important. A video_ts folder from a dvd needs to be kept together. I have my movies set to 1 and all movies are in properly named folders. Each folder has a mkv or iso file, or a video_ts folder. I don't store tv shows, but I'd use 2 for tv shows. This allows each season to be kept together; which is only important if you loose a disk and then need to know which season was lost. Music should be stored with complete albums on the same disk for the same reason and to prevent spin-up delay between songs if you play an album. But all of my music fits on a single disk so split level does not matter. I suggest that you make multiple shares; one for each media type and with distinct split levels. Most media center software, e.g. xbmc, will not have a problem aggregating all of the shares. I keep backups on a single disk per client with multiple clients per disk. I restrict each clients share to a single disk so split level does not matter.
