Typical prices on 3TB and 4TB drives

Featured Replies

My 6 disk server is getting close to full with all 2 TB drives and I will need to upgrade them in the future.  I have 1 TB of free space so I got a few months to be patient and shop around.  I haven't been following prices on the 3TB and 4TB drives and was wondering what is the best prices you guys have seen on them.  I figured some of you might have recently purchased new drives or possibly been looking to get them so might have a good idea of the pricing.  This way I can keep my eye out for a good deal and pickup a few.

Thanks in advance

Least expensive does not always mean "best" -- in fact it's almost always NOT the case.

Just look for good sales on WD Reds or the Seagate NAS units, and use those.  They are far better drives; have 3 year warranties ... and if your data is important to you, are well worth it.  Use the least expensive drives for your backups, which are generally only going to be filled up and (hopefully) rarely actually used.

2TB - $75

3TB - $105

4TB - $150

I have been keeping track of the lowest prices for the past 3 months from Newegg. You can save $5 if you buy the external hard drives but if you take them out of the case you void the warranty (therefore not worth saving $5 IMO).

I have just been keeping track of the lowest prices for a family member. I agree with Gary, spend a little extra on the Reds or Seagate NAS drives.

Has anyone been keeping track of the best 3 & 4 TB WD Red or Seagate NAS drives?

I don't really track them, but I've seem the 3TB WD Reds as low as $124.99 (I probably averaged about $180 or so for my 6  8) -- but I bought them over a year ago).  The best price I've seen on the 4TB Seagate NAS units was $190.

I have the following 4TB drives, at least one of most of the 4TB drives that are available:

It's worth looking at Hitachi drives if you can find them. Backblaze found them to be the most reliable and they've used them long enough to make that judgement. I got one at a really low price recently.

It's too early to say whether the WD or SG NAS drives are reliable, because they are too new. But they are good performers and the 3 year warranty negates any reliability issues assuming if they fail they fail in the first 3 years and two don't fail at once.

Thanks for the info.  I am not necessarily looking to get the cheapest drives and have no problem paying for good quality ones.  I just wasn't sure what the current market prices were and I know from time to time there will be sales or rebates available.  So wanted to keep an eye out on these nice drives for when they do drop in price or go on sale.  The last time I purchased drives the WD Reds and Seagate NAS were not around, so I will have to give them a look.

Thanks for the prices and I was wondering how much more the 4TB cost over the 3TB.  I figured someone was keep track of prices and it's nice to see how the sizes compare.  I am sure with black friday coming up there might be some sales and I can easily wait until then.

I currently have all 2TB Hitachi Drives in my server and they have been going strong for a few years now with zero issues, so I will keep an eye out for them as well along with the WD Reds and Seagate NAS that everyone is suggesting.
