October 11, 201312 yr I replaced a failed disk as per instructions and, "When you Start the array after replacing a failed disk, the system will reconstruct the contents of the failed disk onto the new disk." I don't see this happening. Hitting the refresh button does not show any additional reads, etc. I don't have the format option as I did with ver 4.7. How do I know the disk is being formatted and rebuilt?
October 11, 201312 yr Author Here are two screen shots of the system started, and stopped. I don't see any way to format the disk. I am trying to replace a failed (slot 6) 500 GB drive with a 1TB drive. Additional info: unMenu installed; Simple features deleated; Air video installed; JRC installed
October 11, 201312 yr On the 'Started' screenshot I can see the Rebuild button that needs pressing to start the rebuild of the disk. I think you are getting confused by thinking there should be a Format option.
October 12, 201312 yr Author So, my understanding is that after starting the array I then click on the Rebuild button to first clear, then format, and finally rebuild the contents of the failed drive. This seams easy enough. I just need a little information on what this is all about. I will do some more searching. I was confused about the function of the Rebuild button. Reading the ver. 5 user manual on wiki, I could find no reference to this button. Under the Replace a failed disk heading I found this, "When you Start the array after replacing a failed disk, the system will reconstruct the contents of the failed disk onto the new disk; and, if the new disk is bigger, expand the file system." From this, I was expecting this to be done automatically. When I could not detect any activity my mind went back to ver 4.7 and the Format button. I have also tried to find some reference to this button in the forum. It is probably there but my mind tired after a while. Thank for the help.
October 12, 201312 yr A rebuilt disk does not need to be formatted. The entire partition including formatting is restored. If, at any time, you choose to format the disk all of its contents will be lost.
October 12, 201312 yr Author Well, I did not know this. Every new disk I have installed I have formatted. Live and learn, I guess.
