November 5, 201312 yr I suddenly seem to be having a problem with my server connecting to the network. I have a static IP. Occasionally, it would fail to initiate (Sorry I don't know all the correct terms) at startup - which meant I couldn't access the server via the webgui. This happened approx 3xtimes per year. A reboot seemed to solve the problem (whatever it was). Now I seem to be having this issue every time I start the server. Now when this happens, I enter the "ifconfig" command and I only get a return like you would get if you use "ifconfig lo" It shows only the IP address of 127.0.0.0. When this happens the server is not access NOR seen on the network. When the server starts correctly and I use ifconfig I get a return that shows both eth0 and lo. Tonight on a failed connection, I used the ifconfig eth0 and it showed my static IP in the return. Very strange. I have included 3 logs - one showing the correct startup (labelled as such), the other 2 showing a failed startup. Can someone see anything that is amiss? It appears the static IP is recognised in all the logs. Is it possible to set the IP at the server if it does a failed connection? (without having to reboot) Thx unRAID_Network_Logs.zip
November 5, 201312 yr Have you ruled out the possibility of problems with cable or router connectivity? In the logs when you ran IFCONFIG link is not detected. You could try switching to DHCP to see if the server even attempts to ask for an address. Most routers have the ability to set DHCP reservations based on a hardware address. Two observations: your BIOS version is 1101 and the current BETA version is 1809 with 1601 being the most recent stable release. The only mention of a network revision is in the release you are running, so it might be better to leave things alone for now and follow manufacturer's advice on updating firmware. As you probably know, the LAN controller for the P5B-E is Attansic L1 PCI-E Gigabit and from what I can see the driver was added to unRAID a long time ago and hopefully it has kept pace with newer kernels.
November 5, 201312 yr Did you check to see if there is a software update for your router? Most of them have had one or more updates! Does your router permit the reservation of IP addresses? If it does, did you make the reservation?
November 5, 201312 yr Author Lots of things to look into to. I'll reset to DHCP mode and see if that makes a difference. Not sure about IP reservation - been years since I looked into my router. I'll have a look. When the link is NOT detected, can you set the IP address from the command prompt so I don't have to reboot? Thx
November 5, 201312 yr Author Okay...I just found the option to reserve an IP address in my router. I've set it up with the static IP and the MAC address of the server. Now to see if it makes any difference over time.
November 5, 201312 yr The fact you are not getting link makes it seem more like a hardware problem. Does the P5B-e mobo have any LEDs on/near the network connector? Usually there' a green LED for link and a yellow one for activity. You should also see a link light on the router/switch showing the port is active and linked. With DHCP the host should send out some packets looking for an IP address. You should see a few different messages in the syslog after you reboot the unRAID server as to whether or not it can find a DHCP server.

I've never seen it yellow, but then I doubt I've ever looked. I network switch also shows a green LED - one for speed, then other for activity I think. Anyway the bottom one flashes when something is happening. Now I have some direction to follow, I can see where it leads. Thx.
