December 22, 201312 yr Is it possible to make xcase stand vertically? I can't think of any reason you couldn't do that. Airflow shouldn't be an issue, as there are no side vents for intake. So you could either mount it in a 4u desktop rack enclosure; then sit it on its side; or sit it on a 2x8 to elevate it enough that the extensions in the front weren't hitting the floor (I THINK a 2" board provides enough lift ... you'd have to check that => if not, just use two 2x8's). But rather than "kludge" the mounting for a server case, I'd use one of the Lian-Li's that are designed to sit on the floor and have rollers for easy movement.
December 22, 201312 yr ... here's a 4U desktop rack that would let you mount the X-Case for either desktop use, or you could sit it on its side without the need to build something to hold up the bare case. http://www.thomann.de/gb/thon_studiomoebel_desktoprack_5003g.htm

December 22, 201312 yr Yes, from the feedback in these forums, I decided to use the D8000 as my case. Huge it will be, so accessing it's internals might be cumbersome but I will be investigating how well the backplanes work so I can utilise the hot swap ability from the front of the case. The other longer term consideration I had with this case was the possibility of putting in some 4 (or 5)x3 cages when the standard trays are full. Maybe by then too it will be necessary to use all the fans. Growing needs are important to consider but you have to do this in conjunction with time and cost. How quickly will you fill up the case with hdds? When will they all be at the largest capacity available at the time (as another factor)? I found the D8000 offered the ability to grow with 'my' needs as I saw them. Your needs and ability to support them will be yours alone. Cheers, gwl Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

(i see only one to be able to added) and one of my biggest concerns about this case is the sata - power cable mess...
December 23, 201312 yr Where do you plan to add the extra 5x3 cages? If you plan on using 5-3 cages, the PC-343 is a better choice. It's essentially the same as the D-8000 with a slightly different configuration in front. I prefer the D-8000 for it's "cleaner" look, but you can stuff more drives in a 343. The D-8000 with the BP-3 backplanes is a VERY nice arrangement. ... one of my biggest concerns about this case is the sata - power cable mess... If you use either the backplanes or 5-3 cages, once you've arranged the cables you never have to mess with them again. As long as you buy the right lengths, they can be very neatly arranged.
December 23, 201312 yr Author Its true that 343 can hold more drives... via 5x3 cages... put it will cost much much more.. (as i have calculated in a previous post).. Cost & drive capacity make Lian Li D8000 the best choice...
December 23, 201312 yr Cost & drive capacity make Lian Li D8000 the best choice... Agree completely ... as I said much earlier. I simply noted that if you plan to stuff it full of 5-3 cages, the 343 is a better choice, as it accommodates them better. But the D8000 is by far my favorite non-rack-mounted case for high drive-count systems.
December 24, 201312 yr Author Lian li d8000 ordered .. Thank you everyone for your suggestions ... (Special thanks go to garycase) Now will try and decide of the other component parts

I myself and not even sure if the D8000 can take the 4-3/5-3 cages as I haven't needed to, I may have read it somewhere else but it may also only have been referring to the top drive bays. I bought the d8000 on the premise I won't any extra drives for a while, because by the time I am at capacity, drive sizes are likely to be standard at 5Tb or 6Tb so I'll update with whatever is current/affordable at that time. For my needs right now, I just liked the fact that I didn't have to cram 5 drives into 3 spots which creates a lot of extra heat. The extra ventilation helps keep temps down and [i suspect] the longevity of the drives with the right air flow. Cheers, gwl
December 27, 201312 yr Author Can you please tell me of your configuration? ( motherboard, fans, raid cards etc)
