[SOLVED] Cache Drive Questions

Featured Replies

I just recently bought a 128GB SSD drive to use as a cache drive. My sole purpose of this drive is really to install the glftpd plugin, and download files to it and then manually move them into the array. My first question is, is it possible to not have the cache drive visible as a share? I want it to be a share, just not visible. My other question is, what does this really mean?

The real power of a cache disk is realized when User Shares are enabled. The cache disk may be automatically ‘included’ in every user share. Hence any object – a file or directory - created on a user share is created on the cache disk (provided that enough space is available). Therefore, when you browse the files on a user share, the listings will transparently include objects on the cache disk as well as those on the other data disks.

Does this mean any folder I create on the cache drive will replicate to the array drives and vice versa? I literally just want to use it as a temporary place to download files via FTP.

Make a "cache-only" share that is "hidden". Hidden means that it will not appear in the Windows Network Neighborhood but is still accessible if the name is known. Make sure to disable the disk shares.

If you have User shares enabled then by default each top level folder created on the cache drive will appear as a user share.  If you do not want this content to be replicated to the array then set it as a 'cache only' share.

Conversely for each user share you can specify whether it should use the cache drive at all when you try to write new files to that share.  If it can then files are initially written to the cache drive (which is faster).  If the user share is specified to not use the cache drive then files are written directly to the array.

For any share that is not cache only, and is specified to use the cache drive, then any files found will be automatically moved to the corresponding location on the main array when the mover runs overnight (or when you explicitly invoke it).

Where is the "cache-only" setting? I did set my shares to Use cache disk: No but cant seem to find the cache only setting.

On the share settings page there is a "Use cache disk" option with options of Yes, No or Only.  This last option means the share is only on the cache disk, and not the main array.
