Supermicro motherboards to go with Haswell chips

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I want to build an unraid server with about 15-20 drives, and ability to run a fully functional PLEX server that can stream videos from my collection with low power consumption. My current unraid system works great, but it was built entirely of old recycled computer parts and I think it is high time that focus on building a true server.

I'm thinking about getting the Xeon E3-1225v3 (which supports integrated graphics) or the 1220v3, and was looking for a good, unraid verified motherboard to go with it. I looked over on the wiki page, but the motherboards listed to support the kind of beef I need are no longer in stock at Amazon/Newegg etc.

If you guys have suggestions for a good CPU/motherboard combo (I prefer supermicro), I would love to hear, especially if you already use it in your system and are getting solid performance from it.

Thanks again,

See my sig,  I use the Supermicro X10SLM.  I would go for the 1230v3 instead of the 1220v3 because the 1230 supports hyperthreading.  I think if you are planning to use ESX you need to install drivers for the network cards on this board I believe.

I use plex on the older 1230v2 system,  haven't tested it to destruction but have 3-4 users and I've never had any problems.

Chris,

Thanks for the great suggestion. Actually, the intention of this project is purely to develop a quality server that can maintain good read/write speeds and flawlessly stream over a hard network connection (1080p movies) via PLEX if needed. I'm not planning on using this for any virtualization purpose.

I think the E3-1230v3 is a good idea. For the motherboard, I have been looking at the following options:

X10-SLM-F-0 :The one you suggested ($179 at NE)

  X10-SAT-0 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182830 -- has 8 x 6 GB/s SATA,

  more pricey $270 at NE.

I'm not sure that I am getting more of what I need with that extra $100, since, again, this will be used primarily for streaming purposes. The issue I seem to have trouble with, is finding a compatible ECC unbuffered DDR3 to go with the X10-SLM-F-0. What type of RAM are you using on your build?

X10SAT will save you buying an 8 port HDD controller.... but it is a desktop board so is probably going to use more power.  Also not sure it has IPMI?  Supermicro site doesn't mention it.

As for RAM,  I bought my board in a bundle with RAM and CPU so I'm not sure the exact part number of the memory I have.

Your CPU is a bit of overkill for some transcoding... If you're not planning on virtualization, you could prolly save some power. I can run 1 raw and 2 transcoded streams off my box below with plex, sb, cp, sab and transmission... Never seen a dropped frame.
