February 15, 201412 yr I'm running 4.7 happily and have been watching the progress of 5 from the wings. Now that it's released and stable, I'm thinking about upgrading, but after looking all over the forums and wiki, can't seem to find a compelling reason to. Why should I upgrade to 5.x? What are the killer new features? The changelog seems to be filled with minutiae. I vaguely remember support for 4tb drives being part of it, but figure there must be more good stuff in there.
February 15, 201412 yr The key thing that may push you onto the 5.x series (or later) is support for disks larger than 2TB.
February 15, 201412 yr If you're not having any issues and don't need support for > 2TB drives, there is no compelling reason to upgrade. Support for the larger drives is by far the most compelling reason folks upgrade. I have 4 UnRAID servers ... 2 on v5, 1 on v6 and 1 still on v4.7. The v4.7 is my main media server for the house -- and has plenty of capacity, with no near-term likelihood of needing more. I've not bothered to upgrade it simply because it's been so rock-solid. Had 348 days of runtime the last time I rebooted it (after a power failure). In fact, I think it's only been rebooted ~ 4 times in the past 3 years. I'll upgrade it "one of these days" ... probably if the parity drive fails and needs to be replaced -- but there's no compelling need to. The v6 server is a small test box with none of my data on it.
February 15, 201412 yr I do have a mac. What's the benefit? Afp? Time machine support? Yes, Time Machine support. AFP is only need for TM. Mavericks uses SMB for file service with AFP depreciated.
February 16, 201412 yr Mavericks and unRAID 5.0.x's latest SMB support are excellent together. Connections to unRAID are predictable, consistent and stable for me. And TM used to require near daily maintenance to keep it running...now I go a week or two with no need to touch it.
