March 16, 201412 yr Finally got the UPS i had out of storage. It's been sitting there for a few years but with the battery never connected. I ripped off the labels on the battery and turned it 180* as per the instructions and connected it to my server. Got the APCUPSD plg installed as well. Now I have some questions. Here is the settings page details. Daemon: Running UPS: ONLINE NOBATT My Settings are Enable APC UPS Daemon: Yes UPS Cable: usb UPS Type: usb Device: Battery Level: 75 Minutes: 5 Timeout: 90 Kill UPS: Yes Show Full Status: Yes APC UPS Status APC 001,036,0907 DATE 2014-03-16 17:29:45 -0500 HOSTNAME Tower VERSION 3.14.10 (13 September 2011) slackware UPSNAME Tower CABLE USB Cable DRIVER USB UPS Driver UPSMODE Stand Alone STARTTIME 2014-03-16 17:29:40 -0500 MODEL Back-UPS BX1300G STATUS ONLINE NOBATT LINEV 124.0 Volts LOADPCT 8.0 Percent Load Capacity BCHARGE 100.0 Percent TIMELEFT 53.1 Minutes MBATTCHG 75 Percent MINTIMEL 5 Minutes MAXTIME 90 Seconds SENSE Medium LOTRANS 088.0 Volts HITRANS 139.0 Volts ALARMDEL No alarm BATTV 27.0 Volts LASTXFER No transfers since turnon NUMXFERS 0 TONBATT 0 seconds CUMONBATT 0 seconds XOFFBATT N/A SELFTEST NO STATFLAG 0x03000008 Status Flag SERIALNO 3B0944X03993 BATTDATE 2009-10-28 NOMINV 120 Volts NOMBATTV 24.0 Volts NOMPOWER 780 Watts FIRMWARE 864.L1 .D USB FW:L1 END APC 2014-03-16 17:29:46 -0500 I'm assuming I set the UPS to shut down my server if battery capacity reaches 75% or outage lasts longer than 5 minutes. Is that correct? My other question is what is "ONLINE NOBATT"? Is my battery dead? If so why do BCHARGE and TIMELEFT have values? Thanks!
March 17, 201412 yr Author Tried unplugging the UPS and the UPS and server both shutdown when I pulled the plug. They did not run on the battery.
March 17, 201412 yr "Battery Level: 75" means the server will be shutdown when UPS arrives 75% capacity, not 75% depleted. "Kill UPS: Yes" means the UPS itself will be shutdown. My guess is that due to a peak of load on the UPS during the power cut, the capacity (at least momentarily) fell below the 75% and the UPS has shutdown. Just my 2 cents, anyway...
March 17, 201412 yr You're correct in your assumption r.e. the settings -- you've set it so the UPS will shut down the server if the battery capacity falls below 75%, or after 5 minutes of runtime ... whichever happens first. In other words, wait 5 minutes to shut down unless the battery capacity is below 75% ... in that case shut down NOW. Note that this does NOT mean the UPS shuts down -- it means the power control software starts the shutdown process on the computer. The last thing the power-control shutdown software does is "tell" the UPS to shut itself down in 2 minutes (to give the PC time to finish the shutdown process). HOWEVER ... I suspect your battery is dead. It's simply too old. Just "... sitting there for a few years ..." is very bad for a battery -- and you've clearly exceeded its shelf life. The UPS itself should be fine ... but you need to buy a new battery for it. Just in case, be sure you've correctly connected the battery wires ... but it's very likely it's time to replace the battery.

I replaced the batteries today and now it's working like it should.
