Mini ITX build

Featured Replies

Hello, I am putting together a couple unraid rigs and wanted to run the hardware by you guys before pulling the trigger. I'm putting them together to do a couple things. First, myself, my parents and my siblings all reside at different residences and most don't have a good backup for any of their important files, family photos etc. and I'd like to fix that. Second, I have a large media library that is likewise unprotected and an unraid setup just makes sense for what I do with it. I intend on running operating it with Crashplan and Plex server so it will be used for some transcoding. I would also like to set up everything a hair on the heavy side so I can do more in the future if I so desire. Also, the second array will be simply for an offsite mirror storage in case of an event like a home fire so I'll probably dumb down the processing & ram.

All my links will be for newegg.ca since I'm in Canada but I believe they are all also available at newegg.com.

So to start I will have 12TB usable space but that will likely expand as I go along.

Any thoughts or obvious mistakes?

Thank you very much, I'm not entirely sure how I missed that...

Back to the drawing board a little bit then, I'll update when I come up with a good alternative. Suggestions welcome.

Alright, I've edited the OP to include the update.

Thanks for the site recommendation, this will be the first build I do with online parts so I'm used to using a local supplier's building tool that does a lot of the compatibility checks for me. Nice to have an equivalent without the limitation of only what they stock!

Since space in that case once everything is in will be tight, make sure that the heat sink fins on the ripjaws ram you selected won't present a clearance issue.  I've built a few SFF boxes and sometimes this are REALLY close to each other.

TigerDirect.ca. has the Lian-Li  Q 25 on for $98.88.

You might also consider an SFX power supply. I haven't used that case but I'm glad I used SFX in my ITX case. Silverstone has a couple at newegg that would work and they include an adapter plate to fit ATX mounting

Definitely recommend using an SFX power supply.  Note that the best unit for this case is the new Silverstone 300w unit:  http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=458&area=en

Newegg sells this, but has it categorized incorrectly as an ATX unit, so it does NOT come up on the list of Silverstone power supplies when you restrict it to SFX units (as in trurl's link above).  I'd post a direct link, but Newegg's servers are down this morning.

Thanks very much for the advice, this will also be the first device that I'll be assembling smaller than a mid sized tower case so it is really helpful.

As for the psu, I went to http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine and dropped in the specs of this unit and it recommended just over a 300w psu. Am I worrying needlessly or is there a chance that 300 wont cut it at full load?

The 300w Silverstone unit is plenty of power for your build.
