OSX VM ?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I was wondering if it possible to run a OSX Server VM in Unraid Xen. I am expecting the answer "It is against Apple's policy" but I am running a hackintosh so I thought I would ask.

Do you think this is possible ? The install file for OSX is a .dmg so I guess that is a problem ? Also, I suppose a bootloader is necessary as is the case for hackintoshes.

Please let me know if I am out of line ;)

Cheers,

Tom

Can't be done in Xen to my knowledge.

I found this. It is an older version of OSX though. I will try it out this weekend and see if I can get it to work. I am quite the Xen noob though so if anyone has advice I will gladly accept it  :)

EDIT : Unfortunately that guide is incomplete and the installation part worries me. If it is at all like a Hackintosh, the drivers can be tricky to install/find.

Indeed, a search for "OSX XEN guest" and some more recent dates and there are quite a few references out there. There are also reference to VMware and VirtualBox images out there (not sure if they can be converted).

An OSX image that could be run on those rare occasions  you might need a Mac would be useful.

Just today I got Mac OS X 10.5 running on my ESXi server. Newer versions are a little more turn-key, but it can be done.

There are just some things that are best done on a Mac (or in this case, a vMac).

Yes indeed, Google is our friend. This thread might still be a good place to centralize information regarding running OSX on Unraid XEN.

I will try out Mavericks this weekend and let you know how things go.

Count me as highly interested. I’ve got 10.8 in VirtualBox running on my unRAID 5 box to act as an iTunes media server to the AppleTV as well as to run SpamSieve. This is working great, but my understanding (please correct me if I am wrong) is doing this under Xen in unRAID 6 would be more resource efficient.

If you got it running on virtual box, then export the vm, then extract to raw, renamed the raw image from .raw to .img create your cfg and she if that works

I haven’t loaded up the unRAID 6 beta, so I can’t test it out.
