April 18, 201412 yr Last night unRAID dutifully informed me of a drive issue. The array continues to operate. Looks like party drive failed to respond and after controller reset is back online as different device. I have attached syslog and smart report. A long test is running and I will post those results once complete. The drive did pass a short test. At this point parity is invalid (missing) as files have been added and changed. Going from the twiki I can replace the drive, but not certain the procedure is exactly the same since this is a parity (not data) drive. Replace the drive A data drive needs to be replaced for whatever reason. backup 'config/super.dat' and 'config/disk.cfg' files to workstation (Or simply backup the entire config directory.) Stop the array Power down Replace harddrive with new drive. Turn on Replaced drive appears with blue dot Tick the "I'm sure" checkbox, and press "Start will bring the array on-line, start Data-Rebuild, and then expand the file system." Hefty disk activity and main page will show lots of reading on "the other" disks and writing on new disk as data is being rebuilt. End I do not think any data needs to be rebuilt, just parity. Am I correct? I have not gotten to starting this procedure so I might not be given that option. I've been informed that my controller firmware is out of date, and that will be updated from 11 to 17. Does the syslog or smart report show anything else? Assuming the drive passes the long test, can I re-use it? Thanks syslog20140417.txt smartreport1.txt
April 18, 201412 yr Since your syslog excerpts do not tell us, what version of unRAID? A complete syslog would be better. Zip if necessary
April 18, 201412 yr Author It's running unRAID 5.0. Not wanting to change anything until after the disk drives are all back to working order, but will upgrade to newer, 5.0x once parity checks out.
April 18, 201412 yr The drive looks ok. But keep an eye on the reallocated sectors count and the pending sectors count RAW values. Movement of either of those numbers is bad. Go ahead and rebuild parity then compare a new SMART report to the current one.
April 18, 201412 yr Attached smart report after long selftest, passed. so, tonight's plan is to; [*]stop the array [*]power off [*]replace the drive (it's hotswap) [*]power on [*]...things get fuzzy since this is the parity drive... I'm going to go ahead and insert a different drive since this is the parity drive and it has the most hours (by 20,000). I'll plan to re-install this drive and expand after good parity check and upgrades. smartreport2.txt
