September 7, 201411 yr First of all, I am a newby (to unRaid) . Current setup of Franken Box for unRaid test: (NOTE: my idea here was to use current parts on hand to test unRaid, for my needs & fit) ATX Case MB from a gateway m4100 (P4, 2.4) with 2GB RAM 5 current drives including parity (no cache drive) had 6 drives, but removed one as i was thinking it was bad... but i still had same issue. Issue: When coping data to the Tower, using Beyond Compare 3, after a random amount of time the file(s) copy will stop. I have changed: Memory (also not new, used from other projects) Removed a drive that I thought was suspect Used a Windows PC to check the USB (unRaid) chkdsk (from another unRaid form sugestion) And now, I need help sifting through /var/log/syslog as i do not know what I am looking for. If this is found to be a hardware issue, I am willing to scrap all the used parts and finish up the project... but I just want to make sure I identify this issue, and to make sure this is not going to be an issue after spending real dollars on final version of Tower. syslog.txt syslog.txt
September 7, 201411 yr In my experience recycling disks from other systems sometimes causes problems if they are not in good condition. Did you check the disks before adding them to unRAID? I was thinking of something like the pre-clear script or the manufacturers test software. SMART reports for the disks might also be worth having to see if they indicate any potential problems as those are easy to get on the unRAID system.
September 7, 201411 yr Author Also note: Even though the first BC3 copy is currently "stuck", I can start a new BC3 session and that one ran for about 4GB (total copy would have been 40GB). I am starting another copy (NOT using Beyond Compare 3) to see what that does... I guess it could be a BC3 issue.
September 7, 201411 yr Author Ok, regular Windows copy just failed also. I am attaching a new syslog file. syslog2.txt
September 7, 201411 yr There does not seem to be any indication of problems in the syslog. There have been some recent reports of problems with large copies where it appears that the issue might be network related. In particular the router/switch not coping very well with sustained high-throughput traffic. What make/model is your router to see if it is the same type?
September 7, 201411 yr Author Only Layer 2 (switch) between PC and Tower (ie. No Layer 3 until core router). Switch is a Cisco catalyst 2960G. No interface errors on the port connected to PC (g0/17) or the Tower (g0/34)… nor any switch log issues. So I would say the network is not the issue. I am adding back the drive I thought was the issue, and when the clearing of that drive finishes, I will change the share from Most-Free to High-water to see if that will help with this issue. I will also use the linux command "mc" to move files/dirs to match what high-water should be.
September 11, 201411 yr Start in SAFE-mode and test. Attach all SMART reports. Show the output of "ethtool eth0" and ifconfig.
