I currently have Pro version 4.3.3 with 15 drives plus parity for our home family media server.  I want to add an additional drive and was told maybe a year or so ago I had to download and upgrade to some newer version of 4.  I am concerned about being down so I first copied the thumb drive to another and tried to boot off of it, so I would not mess with the original.  But that did not work.  I thinking about just buying the update on stick so if I run into any issues, I can simple put the original stick back in and reboot.  SO my question, is where do I find a list of what are the new features and is 5 or 6 the latest?  Is it literally just a plug in the new stick and boot, then add the 15 drive and parity back to the devices.  Or is this a major thing?  Advise please.

You should be able to upgrade to stable v5.05, assign you drives and your parity. You can select trust my parity and then do a parity check once it's all up and running. V6 is still in beta so I would leave it for now.

Do a backup of your current flash. Format as per the text guidelines found in v5.05 download and copy your pro.key to the config directory. Make sure your 100% sure which is your parity drive. I would also wait for a experienced user to agree or disagree with my comments.

Are you running any addons at all? If not, the process is easier, because addons may have to be updated as well.

The only huge gotcha is if you happen to have some drives that change apparent size when you upgrade because of HPA. 4.7 caught some of those errors and allowed them to be corrected a little more gracefully, so you may end up having to upgrade in 2 stages.

I would recommend getting smart reports from all the drives, and capturing a syslog after a good clean startup and a few hours of running. Zip them all up, and post them for evaluation.

Saving a screenshot showing the current drive serial numbers and assigned slots would be a good idea, screenshots of all the gui settings pages may be useful to recreate any customization you have done.

If you have any failing drives, changing unraid versions before replacing the bad drive is going to make things worse, not better.

Tom is still offering a discount on a second key, now would be an excellent time for you to take advantage of that.

A second key would allow you to do exactly what you want as far as testing the waters before you take a step that would be hard to back out of. You could put a fresh 5.05 install in place on the new usb, boot up and assign only your data drives, and hit start. If any drive shows up as unformatted, you should capture a syslog from that boot session and post it for evaluation. You still should be able to plug your original key back in and be back running at that point.

What I really want is a new flash drive with the key already on it.  Is that what the $30 deal is, or is that key only.  My original was flash drive with key from Tom.

License key only. You'd have to email Tom and ask what he would charge for the physical usb drive, it wasn't mentioned in the thread AFAIK.

Just get the sandisk 8gb cruiser fit key that Tom uses £5 or about $8 on Amazon.

Is there any way other than the default email support@ address?  I sent the original question there but have not heard back.

You could try emailing Tom directly.

Can I go straight from 4.3.3 to the 5.0.5?

Can I go straight from 4.3.3 to the 5.0.5?

There is a good chance it would work, but there is a possibility of data loss under some circumstances. Do you have good backups if something goes wrong? You really need backups anyway, but especially when you are monkeying around with the array.

Posting a syslog from your current install might provide some clues but no guarantees on how smooth the transition might be.

The recommended upgrade path is to 4.7 first.

If something is an issue, can I not just reboot from my original 4.3.3 flash.  I have purchased a new flash drive and am attempting to purchase the second registration key with that special.  I am the point of having formatted, named and installed the 5.05 on this new flash and ready to boot up on that new flash to get the GUID so I can purchase.  If I just boot on the new flash with 5.05 to get the GUID but don't mess with the array, will I still risk loss.  Most is backed up but the reason for the array and parity is to not have to find some way to have 15TB worth of drives for backup.
