Best way to move data to UNRAID from small NAS and reuse HDDs

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

Apologies if this has already been answered. If so , please point me to the right place.

I am planning to move data from 3 x 2-BAY NAS. The HDD in the NAS are all Standalone and I hope to resue them. I have 2 x3TB and 4x 2TB.

In my new UNRAID server, I have 2  x new 4T to begin with. One will be parity.

Whats the best way to migrate data and eventually use all 6 old HDDs.

Should I define Parity in the end after I have all the data along with the 8 HDDs in the sytem.

Thanks for your time

My suggestion would be to follow a process along the lines of:

  • Start with all the drives plugged into the new unRAID server.    Make sure you are clear about all the serial numbers.
  • Set up the array initially using just the 2 4TB drives (i.e. leave the ones from the NAS devices unassigned).    In theory you could start by omitting the parity drive which would make copying faster at the risk of not being resilient against a disk failure.  I prefer to have the resilience in place
  • Copy all the files from one of the old NAS disks to the array disks.  The details of how this is done will vary according to how you intend to do the copying
  • If you are happy you have managed to get all the files off a disk, you can then run the pre-clear script against it.  This will both validate the disk is in good condition, and also make adding the disk into the array fast.
  • Stop the array;  assign the disk that has been pre-cleared;  and restart the array.    You will now be given the option to format the disk just added and make its space available to the array
  • Repeat for each NAS disk in turn until they have all been added.

The above will be a time-consuming process, but most of it is the computer doing all the work as you can start a step and leave it running unattended.

Thanks itimpi. I was thinking of doing the copy over the network and then preclear using the WD lifeguard. But I might follow the step you outlined but only add one drive at a time physically into the UNRAID box and use teracopy. Thanks for the suggestion

WD lifeguard will not do the preclear unRAID requires. Find the preclear script on this forum. You should use it on the new 4TB drives also.

Thanks. I will use preclear.  Does it really take about 20 hrs per TB?

1 cycle is about 10 hrs/TB for me.
