December 13, 201411 yr Hi, Don`t know if this has been asked before, couldn`t find anything in the search. Are there any plans for a middle key say 10 - 12 data drives. I`m sure some people will need more than 5 data drives but won`t need 23. So was just asking if there were any future plans for a 10 - 12 data drive key priced around $90 and the upgrade from plus for around $30 to $35. I will probably need to upgrade my key at some point but I`m sure I`ll never need 23 data drive array. Will
December 15, 201411 yr Author Thanks for the link Ashe, interesting read in your thread. I can see the benefits of upgrading to a Pro licence and maybe adding a 2nd unRaid licence later but that will be for power users and commercial use. It seems like it was considered that there might be a key between plus and pro but looks like it will stay as it is the last post in that thread was over a year ago. I admit its a good deal for the pro licence to have spare capacity for the future you can never have enough. I will get the pro upgrade in time and have some fun trying to fill it up.
December 15, 201411 yr There was another thread that explained the evolution of the pro key but I couldn't find it. It ran along the lines of the original pro key was around 10 devices but users kept requesting more and more so LT grew it to 24 over a period of time without increasing the price. After I read that I saw it as I was getting what I wanted, a 10 to 12 drive array plus extra for free I ended up purchasing the Pro key as I though the value was good, plus considering the 2nd key upgrade I may use in the future. Not that I will go beyond 12 to 14 drives in one box including parity especially as drive sizes are increasing rapidly.
December 18, 201411 yr You know there is an option right know to get a pro key for 30 bucks? It is also possible to buy right now and assign the key to an usb drive at a later time. (For more info see here). edit: Reading further, this is only if you already own a plus or a pro key. So if you are on free, it might not help you. But as you are talking about owning a key above, it won't hurt to try.
December 18, 201411 yr Author I looked at that but it looks like its for a second key that's the same so not plus to pro. I'm thinking of taking this offer up as my Daughter is starting a photography business and I'm trying to convince her that an unRAID box would be beneficial for her.

Thing is that the amount of drives has no impact on the development and/or support of the product... So providing that alternative would not be based on lower costs.. There is a trial license that is free, this is meant for testing out the product The plus key is not five drives by the way, it is seven.. Only you can choose to use parity and cache... Parity is kind of a given, but if you really want to save you can forget about the cache.. And it you really want to go cheaper then try out some of the several free NAS solutions out there.. Perfectly well working and free in software... Most of them (actually all I have found) will hamper you in expendability.. Unraid is overall the cheapest since you can use any drive combination you want, you can expand drive by drive no need to change a lot of drives at the same time.. Also your data is safer then with a regular RAID system.. I believe that if you make a real world comparison; unraid is the cheapest option out there.. Even combined with free software..

I have a plus key 4 data drives(3,3,2,1TB) and a cache drive. Moved from Win 7 to unRAID, I just wanted to know if there were any plans to increase data drives for the plus key or adding a new tier between the plus and pro. I will probably just upgrade to pro so I have it if I need it, like I said earlier I will need more than 5 data drives at some point in the future.
