February 2, 201511 yr I have a single 4 TB fully precleared drive in my main server as a spare. It would be nice for this to spindown (automatically) as it is not used for anything other than a spare This server has no need for a cache drive --- But what about adding this as a cache drive and turning off cache for each of the shares? Will this prevent the disk from being used while at the same time allow for automatic spindown?
February 2, 201511 yr Since UnRAID doesn't support auto-rebuild with a hot-spare, there's no real reason to keep this drive powered. I'd simply unplug the cables from the drive; or if it's in a hot-swap cage I'd just unplug it and store it conveniently close to the server [if you don't mind the cosmetics of a drive that "sticks out", you could just pull it out a half-inch or so.]. Since the system uses AHCI, you can simply plug it in if/when needed without the need for a power-down.
February 2, 201511 yr myMain (part of unmenu) will allow you to spin down a non-array disk. It uses the hdparm command to spin it down.
February 2, 201511 yr Author @gary - the drive is not terribly accessible. I am OK with pulling the plug but would prefer a slightly more elegant solution. @bjp - yup, this is what I have been doing. Thanks for the GREAT plug-in page BTW! However the machine only goes down 2-3 times a year (storm related) and it is easy to forget about non-automated tasks. Not the end of the world if it MUST be done manually. Thanks for the great help everyone!
February 2, 201511 yr I'm not a Linux guy, but perhaps Brian could give you a few lines to add to the "go" script to do the following: (1) Wait a few seconds (to ensure the array has finished booting), and then ... (2) Run the HDParm command to spin down the drive. The only complication is I'm not sure how you could ensure it was always spinning down the correct drive, since drive designators can change between boots. A potentially easier thing would be to add a line that automatically sent you an e-mail reminding you to spin down the drive with MyMain :) [i agree that's a GREAT plug-in ... thanks Brian]
February 2, 201511 yr Author ***THIS**** A potentially easier thing would be to add a line that automatically sent you an e-mail reminding you to spin down the drive with MyMain GREAT IDEA!!! Time to search the forums for a how to!

February 2, 201511 yr Author Good idea - but I maintain the main server via IPMI. It was in a closet - now in a (dry) crawl.
