February 4, 201511 yr Author Put the new drive in and then started rebuilding the old one :-) Was not sure if it is safe to preclear during a rebuild? CPU utilization is high (50% ish). I normally preclear with screen (unmenu) and the following code: /boot/preclear_disk.sh -r 65536 -w 65536 -b 2000 -A -c 3 -M 4 /dev/sdX Is this best practice? Any other recommendations/how you preclear while using server? The odds of a cable actually going bad is miniscule. More likely a reseating issue If it was me, I would rebuild the existing drive and preclear the new one at the same time. If the existing fails again, then you're already half way through the preclear.
February 4, 201511 yr I've only ever run preclear as /boot/preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdX... Never looked at the extra arguments for it. Worst case scenario for doing the preclear and the rebuild at the same time is that it'll be a bit slower. But that's dependant upon your hardware
February 4, 201511 yr Author Oh ok, do you ssh or type into the terminal directly? Also, i think the reason for the code is it will limit memory usage, as well as run the preclear script 3 times. I remember reading there is a risk of running preclear once, and 3x helps with burn in (actually one WD RED drive went bad during preclear and i was able to exchange for a working one with no problems). Any benefit to preclearing multiple times your aware of? I've only ever run preclear as /boot/preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdX... Never looked at the extra arguments for it. February 4, 201511 yr Multiple passes will increase your confidence in your drive if the smart attributes do not increase. I'm just impatient, and thus far have had no problems with any infant mortality problems with hard drives (and, I only buy drives locally), so I know that they've at least arrived in the store in proper shipping packaging. Heard alot of horror stories about how Newegg / Amazon occasionally ship drives. Doesn't matter if you use ssh with screen or directly at the console. Same thing
February 4, 201511 yr Author I have bought from microcenter mainly because for $10-20 you guarantee a working $100-130 HDD (and can use to upgrade if needed since they basically give you a gift card). Agreed, think ssh without screen will drop in the middle of a preclear if it looses connection right? I enjoy not having monitor/keyboard on my unRaid and have managed everything remotely thusfar.
