April 16, 201511 yr Not sure how to read these smart reports...is this a disk that should be replaced? Can you point to what I should be looking at to determine for myself? Basically got an e-mail that my array wasn't working, had a red ball by a drive and the drive wasn't recognized anymore by unraid. I opened up the case to reseat power and SATA cables, hooked it back up, drive was seen and I ran this report. Thanks in advance... disk_report.txt
April 16, 201511 yr Bad disk. These attributes are all bad signs. If this is in your array you need to get a new disk and rebuild this disk contents. Do not delay. Do not run a parity check! 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 098 098 036 Pre-fail Always 2984 187 Reported_Uncorrect 0x0032 001 001 000 Old_age Always 1591 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always 96 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline 96
April 16, 201511 yr Author Is there a way to prevent automatic parity checks? When I get the new drive, just assign it? Can I replace this drive (3tb) with a 2tb drive if the 3tb had less than 2tb on it? What if it had more than 2tb on it but there was a lot of free space on other disks? Then could I replace it with a 2 tb?
April 16, 201511 yr Definitely a bad drive ... a few reallocated sectors wouldn't be a problem; but this has far more than a "few" ... AND it has both pending sectors and offline uncorrectable ... both of which are "no-no's" (i.e. if you have either of those, you should replace the drive). No, you can't replace it with a smaller drive.
April 16, 201511 yr There is a way to stop the parity check from automatically running. I don't have mine auto scheduled so can't advise you, but I'm sure someone will chime in.
April 16, 201511 yr Do you mean the automatic correcting parity check you get when you do an unclean shutdown? No you can't prevent it. You will get an unclean shutdown if you don't stop the array from the GUI before powering off or rebooting. Don't do that if it can be avoided. You will get an automatic correcting parity check if you do.
April 16, 201511 yr Author OK. I may shut the whole thing down until my new drive is ready to avoid the parity risk. Anyone have a good link to best practices for relaxing a drive? Just pop it in after pre clear, assign it and unraid does the rest? First failed drive...
April 17, 201511 yr Not relaxing... Replacing Yes - you need to install the new drive, preclear it (only to test out the new disk, the fact that it comes out precleared is not relevant), then, with array stopped, replace the disk slot from the failed/failing drive with the new drive. UnRaid will provide a message that if you start the array, it will reconstruct onto the new disk. Start the array. Best not to do in a thunderstorm. Good luck!
