After upgrading from 5.0.6 to 6 rc3 i can't find my unRAID anymore...

Featured Replies

just followed the directions about upgrading from a 5.0.x to 6 to a T, copied my old config folder to the USB stick (renamed the default one to "config.default") but when my server booted back up, i couldn't reach it at its previous IP anymore...i can't ping it either at that IP or telnet into it.

how can i find it again without having a monitor/keyboard connected to it? (not that i would even know how to do a clean shutdown now).

where to start?

I am afraid there is no realistic way to debug such a scenario without a keyboard and monitor attached unless you happen to have an IPMI enabled motherboard

so the only way to move forward is to not do anything to the server at the moment until i get a monitor and keyboard attached?

i am at a friend's web-company, so maybe i can ask one his IT guys whether they have some spares i can use...otherwise i'll have to pick one up somewhere else.

i'll be back as soon as i accomplished this first task.

thanks.

one of the IT guys was nice enough to dig up a VGA LCD monitor and PS2 keyboard for me, so now that i have them plugged in i see the following on the monitor (i don't think i ever saw that, even when i used to have a monitor plugged in):

Remove disks or other media.

Press any key to restart

should i hit "any key" to restart?

Never seen that message before so no idea where it has come from!

Not sure there is any sensible thing to do other than hit a key and watch what happens as the system tries to boot.

before i hit that key:

i did have an error in the terminal output when trying to make the USB stick bootable, so i wonder whether it isn't...here's the output:

and the other problem now is that the server won't accept input from the keyboard, probably bc it was plugged in after it powered on (like many old PC's do).

so am i basically looking at a forced shut-down and parity rebuild, if and when i get it to fully boot up again? i think i know the answer to that question already :-/

PS/2 keyboards pretty much always require to be plugged in prior to starting up in order to initialise in my experience.  I don't think you have any issue with your drives... by the looks of your terminal output, it simply failed to create the bootable portion of the USB drive successfully, and that's what you're seeing when it tries to boot up... that error message is fairly typical of not being able to successfully find anything to boot from.

I'd have another crack at running the make_bootable script and copying over your config etc again, and booting up from there.  Perhaps even try doing that step from a different PC.

yeah, that's what i figured too, BetaQuasi...i tried doing the whole USB stick setup again on my Mac but noticed that CleanMyMac kept interfering, by doing some "cleanup" of the USB stick (probably deleting essential files while they were being created)...after it threw up the same errors again but claimed to be bootable, i got the (almost) the same error, but this time it literally said that no bootable device was found.

so i took it to a little netbook i have for times when i have to have access to a real Windows environment, did the whole procedure again, and wouldn't you know it, it appears to be booting now...let's see what happens...

yup, it's up and running, Web GUI and all, but it detected an unclean shutdown, as i feared, so i guess the whole reason i came in today, upgrading one of the disks in the array to a bigger one, will have to wait another day.

but at least it's running again...phew!

thanks again, guys, for holding my hand through this! just didn't wanna make any data-fatal mistakes.

Glad it's running now.    Two observations ...

(1)  PS/2 devices should NEVER be hot-plugged.    You're lucky you didn't cause damage to the system (this can fry your PS/2 ports).    If you want to hot-plug a keyboard, use a USB one.

(2)  The message you were seeing ["... Remove disks or other media.  ...    Press any key to restart..."]  is common => it almost always means your selected boot device isn't bootable OR that the BIOS is trying to boot from the wrong device.

And it's my understanding that it's remotely possible to fry the motherboard too, at least it was in the old days.

Completely agree.

Yes, that's absolutely possible -- I've seen it happen.

I also don't recommend hot-plugging video connections (except HDMI, which are explicitly designed for it) ... but as long as one end is off (i.e. the display) it's not nearly as dangerous as hot-plugging PS/2 ports.

Very simple rule of thumb:  If in doubt, plug/unplug connections when the equipment is OFF  :)

well, then i guess i'm very lucky that not more damage was done than losing parity sync...thanks for pointing that out, guys...i'll be more careful next time.
