October 23, 201510 yr Hey, I'm new to using Unraid and I've tried to cover all my basics on how to setup the system. but the thing is I am getting very low read/write speeds to the Unraid machine. 10-11 MB/s I have a network that is wired to be 1gb, there is no issues with the network because I've already used it with maxed out speeds transferring data to the same connection that the unraid machine is connected. this I do not use cache ssd yet, and i am using parity drive, i've got 9 drives in total, 6 x 4TB + 3 x 3TB , using one of the 4TB as my parity disk. for the Unraid version, using the latest stable v6 version. please let me know if you have any suggestions on what can I do to increase my speeds. from what I've read on the forum same setup should provide about 40MB/s not expecting to get 100MB/s without a cache ssd. thanks,
October 23, 201510 yr How fast can you transfer files within the server? If there is a problem with SATA cables or a failing drive it should show up there as well. https://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Transferring_Files_Within_the_unRAID_Server I suspect the problem is with your network.
October 23, 201510 yr Post diagnostics, see the sticky "Need help? Read me first!". Have you verified that the unRAID server is getting 1000Mbit/s and not 100Mbit/s? In the web-UI, check Dashboard, System status (if I recall correctly). Edit: Interpreting "the same connection that the unraid machine is connected" as just having tested the same connection with some other device, not unRAID.
October 23, 201510 yr Author regarding the copying between two drivers internally, using ssh i am not aware of anyway that I can see the speed of the transfer but a 3.5GB file was copied between two different drives really quickly like in a few seconds. the system information is: Network: eth0: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex previously i had another pc connected to the same Ethernet port and i got the full 1G network connection. not changing anything in the network i only connected the new unraid machine, that sees the 1000mb/s connection. attached the diagnostics zip file -------------- following some additional testing, I've used an application called: Lan Speed Test, and directed the test to the "shared folder" of the unraid machine, and I am getting write: 70 MB/s reads: 86.6 MB/s which is strange, how come I don't get the same speeds using explorer copying as usual ? tower-diagnostics-20151023-1916.zip
October 23, 201510 yr Try using Midnight Commander (in the link I previously posted). It shows a transfer rate. Make sure you are operating on disk shares (eg. /mnt/disk1/Share). Another way to monitor speed is to install 'System Stats' http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=36543.0 The 'Storage' graph shows double the transfer rate (because of parity overhead). The 'Network' graph allows monitoring Ethernet traffic. I think both of these are invaluable tools to have in your tool chest.
October 23, 201510 yr Author ohlwiler, thanks for suggesting the tools. the results are as follows:, using cm to copy between the drives i got around 50-70 MB/s for a large file. when I tried looking at the system stats -> Network part while i was copying using explorer to a folder on my local machine, i noticed that in the stats graph I was getting 97 MB/s but the copy transfer speeds were still 11 MB/s and nothing more. --------- do you have a good guide for setting up the shares? I think that is the only place were I could have made a mistake.
October 23, 201510 yr I usually write to my array using disk shares. I use user shares to read from the array, so I'm not the best authority. A pretty good overview is in the UnRAID 6 Manual. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/UnRAID_Manual_6#User_Shares The numbers you post make no sense to me. I would trust the 'Network' graph to monitor speeds. What tool are you using to write to your array? How are you monitoring the speeds? I usually use TeraCopy on Windows (another favorite around here). When monitoring the transfer speeds in TeraCopy, Windows Task Manager:Networking and Unraid:Stats:Network all agree.
October 23, 201510 yr Author I've added a screen shot of the numbers i am seeing, let me know if it makes any sense. Thanks!
October 23, 201510 yr I've added a screen shot of the numbers i am seeing, let me know if it makes any sense. Thanks! The screen shot Task Manager says 91.9 Mbps send, which would be roughly 11 MB/s. Seems consistent. Edit: Is the Task Manager showing the graph with 100 Mbps as max because it looks good, or because the Windows computer's network is only running 100 Mbps? Not familiar with that particular version.
October 23, 201510 yr Author now that you mentioned it, it does look like the unraid monitor says the same, which means they are all consistent as well as the Lan speed test. that was my mistake reading Mb/s as MB/s .. which means I am still with the same slow transfer speed issue that I have no idea why it is so slow.
October 23, 201510 yr Is the computer connected to the same switch as the unRAID server? What does your network look like? Are you sure the Windows computer is connected with 1000Mbps? Have you tried restarting the switch? That has solved similar issues in the past, believe it or not.
October 23, 201510 yr Author never mind, found the issue, even when i was sure the network was flawless, i just noticed I niced the network wall connector when i was putting in the new unraid machine,.connecting the unraid directly to the switch gave me a good 100-120 MB/s transfer speeds. anyway thanks to anyone who tried to help me!
October 23, 201510 yr ... I am getting very low read/write speeds to the Unraid machine. 10-11 MB/s Speeds in the 11MB/s range clearly indicate your network is only working at 100Mb speed. Check your cables and connections ... it's likely that you DO have a connection, but that one of the wire pairs isn't making contact, so the connection is being degraded to 100Mb speeds. Try new cables; a different switch port; or a direct connection between your router/switch and the server if there are other components involved in the connection.
October 23, 201510 yr ... I see you found the issue while I was responding => it was indeed a connector (as I suspected). You can simply replace the wall plate; or possibly just re-connected the wires if you just have a loose one.
