November 8, 201510 yr Hello, First post to the forums here but my motherboard recently died, being around 7 years old it had a fairly decent life but now stuck on choosing another board. Looking through all the posts i have seen a lot of problems with NIC's but some that were claimed to be fixed in the 6.0 beta 5 - beta 10. Is there anyway to clarify if this is still the case and then i can go ahead and order the new board to get back up and running. http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A88M%20Extreme4+/?cat=Specifications - Running on Qualcomm Atheros AR8171 chipset (apparently fixed in v6 beta's) http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A88X%20Pro3+/?cat=Specifications - Running on Realtek RTL8111GR ( i know realtek have had issues from the hardware guide but are these stil present?) I will be purchasing new cpu and ram at the same time but i have found no issues in my current choice's. Thank you
November 8, 201510 yr You will likely have far less problems switching to an Intel cpu and a motherboard using an Intel NIC.
November 8, 201510 yr Author Is there any good combinations to be found for around £200 for cpu, ram and motherboard. I have found the i3 4170 to be a good match on performance and price, but unsure as have only used higher up i5's for gaming.
November 8, 201510 yr The i3 4170 is fine ... it's an excellent choice for an upgrade as long as you don't need I/O pass-through support (vt-d) for VM's. Supports ECC RAM if used on a server-class motherboard with a Cxxx series chipset, so it'd a very good choice for a fault-tolerant server.
November 10, 201510 yr Hello, http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A88M%20Extreme4+/?cat=Specifications - Running on Qualcomm Atheros AR8171 chipset (apparently fixed in v6 beta's) http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A88X%20Pro3+/?cat=Specifications - Running on Realtek RTL8111GR ( i know realtek have had issues from the hardware guide but are these stil present?) Do go with Intel. I started out all AMD as the pricing was irresistible, but I paid for it quickly in power consumption and compatibility issues with some HBA cards. The idle drain on those Intel boards is so low vs idle on AMD; it really eats your lunch.
