Why can't it be any...*any*... Other brand than Seagates?

Is Seagate really that bad? Looking at amazon/newegg reviews of ANY hard drive there is always an alarmingly high percentage of bad reviews, makes you wonder if it really matters.

 

 

Best buy has a 5tb external wd for $120. Same price point and better brand imo

I've had a 4tb seagate desktop drive (ST4000DM000) running as my parity drive for about a year now.  It's a good drive.  I'd prefer a WD red nas drive but I already had it so i'm going to run it.  I might eventually swap it out though for a 6tb red and reuse it as a data drive.

The 5tb Seagate externals run ST5000DM000 inside right?  I heard the performance of that drive is garbage.  Is that correct or I heard wrong?

I have at least one Seagate drive and it has been spinning away for a while now without issue. (knock on wood) Many here have Seagates and they're fine. Now, the 3TB Seagates from earlier had a lot of problems and I wouldn't touch those with a stick. I'd love one of those new 8TB shingled Seagate drives.
