2 disks are failing, which should I replace first?

Featured Replies

So I restarted my server the other day and now two disks have the little warning triangle and the errors are 187(Reported uncorrect),188(Command timeout) on one disk and 197(Current pending sector) on the other. The first disk is an 8TB seagate which is still under warranty. The second is a 3TB WD that is probably 3 years old.

I would replace the one with pending sectors, as that usually means bad sectors that will cause read errors.

Just to add that the warnings in the first disk don’t necessarily mean there’s a problem, I would keep monitoring them and also run a SMART extended test (disable spin down for that disk or it can abort the test)

I looked up the error and backblaze said it was one of there errors that they come across that usually means a disk is going to fail soon. Also I just started the extended SMART test to see what happens.

Several folks have indicated that they're seeing command timeout reports for the 8TB Seagates under 6.1.4 => are you running this version?  If so, those may not be anything to worry about, although I'd certainly watch to see if the value deteriorates.

I'd definitely replace the 3TB WD.  I don't keep any disks with pending sectors in my array -- those are good drives to reformat and add to my backup disk set.

This is why this needs fixed, or some sort of warning on the forum.  There's another person about to bin a perfectly good drive.

Yes I'm on 6.1.4, I didn't know about the other people having problems so ill just wait on that drive and keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads up!! I am definitely going to replace the 3TB drive. So you use those disks to back up your unraid setup?

I keep a full set of backups for all my servers.  By using drives I've replaced (either to get larger ones or due to pending sectors or to more reallocations than I like) I don't have to buy many drives just for backup purposes.  Remember that UnRAID (or any other RAID system) is NOT a substitute for maintaining backups of your data.
