Parity drive automatically unmounted

So I just picked up a few 5TB drives at bargain prices to expand the space in my system. Before I went ahead with that install, I thought to take a quick look at my current system status and see what was happening so I could plan my installs effectively.

To my surprise the parity drive had 'unmounted' itself from the array, my data was unprotected against any loss, and the parity drive had an insane number of writes along with a few errors on the status page.

Looking at the SMART report for the drive in question (WD Red) and it seems to be OK. I have started the rebuild for now and it's 50% through without any problems.

Anybody have any idea what actually happened?

Parity dropped offline, if there are no SMART issues let the rebuild complete and keep monitoring disk, healthy SMART doesn’t always equal healthy disk, although it could also be a cable / backplane issue.

You should turn notifications on so you are warned as soon as there is an issue with the array.

Thank you for that.

Parity build has been completed now and I have started a parity check. Anything else you recommend I do/ run on the disk to test its health?

Recently I had a 3TB WD green that would go offline once every couple of weeks, SMART was healthy, I confirmed it was a disk issue by using it in another server and having the same problem.

Besides monitoring the disk you could change sata/power cables or backplane to rule them out.

I'm using a HP Microserver with fixed bays so isolating a cable/ backplane issue will be a pain.

I think I will replace the drive with one of the new ones I bought and see what happens.

Thanks for your help.
