IOMMU Required for GPU Passthrough?

Featured Replies

So I have spent what seems like a small fortune on hardware and an UNRAID Pro license and I am now at the point of creating a Windows 10 VM with GPU Passthrough.

I want to have my Win 10 VM to show up on my monitor through my nVidia Video card.  That takes GPU Passthrough right?  Does passthrough require IOMMU?

Right now my IOMMU is 'Disabled' and I have a I7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz which I believe doesn't support IUMMU.

Does this mean I am screwed and can't have my VM working on my monitor?

Maybe your chipset has it disabled. I would check your  bios to be sure.

I tried but couldn't find it, googled around and couldn't find it...I am using the MSI Z87-G45 so if anyone knows where it is hiding please let me know!

Hi.

A new user here.

I have managed to set up quite a few things so far and all seems better than first expected.

I have a significant question that my reading has not provided an answer to.

My system info says that I have HVM and IOMMU enabled (See Below). Based on the hardware in the system, would I be able to passthrough a GPU for Openelec in a vm with passthrough?

Model: Custom

M/B: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. - H97M-D3H

CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz

HVM: Enabled

IOMMU: Enabled

Cache: 256 kB, 1024 kB, 6144 kB

Memory: 32768 MB (max. installable capacity 32 GB)

Network: eth0: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex

Kernel: Linux 4.1.17-unRAID x86_64

OpenSSL: 1.0.1r

Yep, although you'll need a discrete gfx card.

Great to know - Thanks for the rapid reply!

I have a MSI geforce 210 kicking about - not much coming up via search to say whether that is likely to passthrough.

Any experience?

If not, can you recommend a cheap as chips low profile alternative?

Cheers,

Try it and see... I've used a HD6450 in Windows & Mac with no problems but ymmv...

Cheers,

In my testing with a G210 Zotac, it was hit or miss.

Driver install in Windows would cause it to lock up, can't remember if whole server or just VM, but seemed fine afterwards. OE required the legacy drivers, and at the time they weren't included in the LT image (may still not be).

Anyhow, I had enough issues to replace it, hopefully yours will act differently (it can be different by brand).

As far as alternative, I'd recommend the GT720, it serves me extremely well.
