chrismo16
Hello all. Very new to Unraid and am testing with the trial before buying. Here is the setup: VM Settings OS: Win 8.1/2012 (Actually running Win 10) CPU: Host Passthrough (Intel Xeaon DF-1540) CPUs: Core 0-1 Memory: 1GB min-4GB max Machine:i440fx-2.3 BIOS: OVMF Hyper-V: Yes When I first installed the OS, I used the video card drivers from Windows Update. There was no sound, Playback Devices showed Nvidia HDMI Output (port 0) and Nvidia HDMI Output (port 1) but both say not plugged in, and in Device Manager manager Nvidia High Definition Audio under Sound Device. I then downloaded the most recent Nvidia driver package and installed it. Still no sound (except for a brief period which I will explain shortly), Playback Devices is empty, and Device Manager lists NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM) as the sound device. Now for the brief period of sound. I had a Youtube video playing in the background as I installed the driver package downloaded from Nvidia. Half way through installation I began hearing sound from the video and continued to hear it until I rebooted once installation was complete. Sound did not persist once the system came back up. I have looked for a rom for this card but no such luck. Not even sure this is necessary. Also, I am using a Supermicro server board so onboard audio isn't an option. If I can't get this resolved I may purchase a USB audio device but would like avoid that. I've tried to include as much info as possible but please let me know if anything else is needed to help troubleshoot. Thanks for reading this lengthy post and for any help you can give. Kryspy
I have a Windows 10 VM for Steam gaming and same here; no sound over HDMI. EVGA 750 Ti. I just use the onboard sound. Kryspy Quote Link to comment
chrismo16
Thanks for the reply but as I mentioned there is no on board sound on my motherboard. I may have narrowed the isue down to the Virtio drivers. I just created a new VM and sound was fine untill I installed the drivers from the version 0.1.112 iso. I installed all of the x64 drivers in Windows 10 folders plus the guest-agent. Any of these known to cause issues? Should I try an earlier version that only has 8.1 drivers? Quote Link to comment
saarg
You have to disable hyper-v for nvidia cards. Not sure if that fixes your problem though. Also set your memory to the same amount on both min and max. 1GB is way too little for a windows 10 VM. You only have to install the drivers listed in the unraid 6 manual in the wiki, not everyone. chrismo16
I believe installing those unnecessary drivers is the cause. Testing now. Could you explain why Hyper-V is not suggested for Nvidia? Also, what does enabling Hyper-V accomplish? Quote Link to comment
saarg
If hyper-v is enabled you will not be able to install the driver and will have a code 43 if you look at the GPU in the device manager. So you do not really have working drivers for the GPU and ergo, no sound. It is supposed to be disabled automatically when you choose a nvidia card for pass through, so you might have enabled this yourself? Hyper-v is supposed to make the VM run faster.
