January 15, 201610 yr I just bought Unraid Basic. I have 6 disks 4 x 2tb WD RED 1x Samsung ssd and 1x 1tb wd blue. That is six devices. But when I go to main and try to assign them it says too many devices... January 15, 201610 yr I'm under the impression that Basic supports only 4 devices? Not sure if this is the newest post regarding the structure or not. https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=38192.0
January 15, 201610 yr Author When I bought it for 59 dollars like 2 hours ago, it said 6. Does everything count as a device? Video Card? USB Key they require? what counts as an attached device. This has been ridiculous so far, I should have read up first.
January 15, 201610 yr You should be good to go. The drive count increased from 7 to 12. However, please note that they do not count exactly the same thing. The version 5 drive count was only for array devices. You could have independent drives in the array (e.g.,. for preclearing, warm spare, etc.) and they would not affect the number. With verion [sic] 6, the count includes ALL drives in the server, whether used by the array or not. I doubt video cards count as "devices". But, upon looking at the registration page (haven't looked there in ages -- had Pro's from the get go even with 5.0), it says "6 devices". But the quote above from that thread I linked, says the "count includes ALL drives in the server." What ALL drives do you have? I suspect a thumb"drive" ? Not sure if that would count or not. If ALL the "drives" you have are those you listed, don't assign the cache drive and try to bring up the array. If it works, I guess that would answer that. Cache drive can always be added later (with a key upgrade), or, if you're set on having a cache drive, assign one less data drive. Try to narrow it down I guess. Though, I would agree, having a clear and concise definition of what constitutes a "device" would be, well, only courteous.
January 15, 201610 yr From the wiki "Unraid 6/Getting Started": So are you ready to get started? Great! You’ve come to the right place! In this guide we will be covering how to prepare your flash device, boot the system, and configure your first array. The entire process should take less than 15 minutes. So, I guess the flash/thumbdrive is a "device". Though again, it's not as clear as it -really- should be.
January 15, 201610 yr Hmm you have up to sdh already - that's 8 disks including the flash drive - do you have a multi-format card reader installed?

However all other storage devices count even if not assigned to be used by unRAID. If you have another USB device then try unplugging it. Note that the check is done when the array is started - you can quite happily plug in additional devices if the array is already started - many people plug in a USB HDD at this point for file transfer or backup purposes.
