Passthrough COM port

Featured Replies

My mainboard is having a COM1 port and I have enabled it in my BIOS. Windows 10 is showing the port and claims that it's working ok but my application isn't having access to it.

Is there anything I need to add/do/whatsoever? Thanks a lot.

I recently tried helping someone with serial port pass through to a VM. I never got this to work quite right and don't see us spending more time on it any time soon. I was able to pass through a discrete serial HBA that was installed in a PCIe slot, but not the onboard serial ports.

Depending on how much money you want to throw at the problem, it's definitely possible to have serial ports accessible to a VM. I personally use an IOLAN DS1 so I can put the serial port physically next to the equipment and access it from anywhere on my network, even over WAN if you want. Pretty sure you could pass through a USB-serial adapter like a Keyspan by Tripp Lite USA-19HS.

What are you trying to use the serial port to access?

Thanks to both of you.

@jonathan, I was trying to connect my Daum Electronic Ergometer (ergo_bike_8008_TRS) to a Windows 10 VM. The cockpit need to be connected via a serial cable and this wasn't even the latest and greatest back in 2009 when I was buying it. I'm afraid that I either have the buy the original Daun USB Serial/Bluetooth adapter or a USB/Serial adapter to connect my RS232 cable.

I'm passing through my serial port fine to a Windows 10 VM, try this xml:-

<serial type='dev'>

      <source path='/dev/ttyS0'/>

      <target port='0'/>

  </serial>

obviously you need to ensure /dev/ttyS0 is your serial port on the server.

It appeared as COM2 for me in Windows.

Thanks a lot fireplex.

That was working. The app was recognizing the ergometers cockpit but was crashing afterwards. Might be an app issue. Otherwise I will help myself with a USB/Serial converter.

Glad it worked (sort of), mine connects to an X10 CM12U automation controller and no issues so far.
