unmountable disk in array, what to do?

Featured Replies

Hello, hoping for some advice, I'm pretty new to unRAID but really pleased with it so far and learning more every day (coming from several Drobos, FlexRAID and DrivePool).

I set up my array without preclearing the drives first, since I had been using them in Stablebit DrivePool/Scanner in Windows without issue for about a year.  Perhaps that's a dangerous assumption?  :-[

Originally I had 5 x 4TB Reds in the array, but one of the drives was showing "unmountable".  At that point I should have posted and asked for help...sigh...

Anyway, I removed the "unmountable" drive, did a "New Config", and basically shrank the array so I could remove and preclear the drive properly.  It precleared successfully, I only did 1 pass since it's a pretty new drive.  I haven't added it back because now another drive is showing "unmountable"...what gives?

I've just finished preclearing an additional 4TB Red, brand new (so I have 2 4TB Reds precleared standing by).  I don't have valuable data on the array yet, so I can tear it all down if needed, but I'm hoping that's a last resort.  Also, I have my Docker apps and plugins configured, so I would like to not lose that stuff if possible.

I would like to know what are my options?  Does this seem like a deeper hardware issue?  I've recently installed 2 x Dell Perc H310 cards, flashed with the Dell firmware.

I've attached a screenshot and diagnostics.  Thanks for any help, I appreciate your time.

Drive SMART looks OK. What filesystem do you think was on the disk?

That’s a strange issue, I assume both went unmountable in quick succession, since you have few disks, first thing I would do is move them all to the onboard ports and see if the issue persists.

Thanks for the replies.

Most likely NTFS.

Ok I've moved the 5 Red drives to the onboard ports (two of my ports don't work in unRAID I think due to the Marvel bug - so I disabled those ones in the BIOS).  I've left my cache drive and mythtv record drive on the Dell card.

The same Red drive is still showing as unmountable.

Do you mean xfs?

By the issues persisting I meant format that disk, since you say there's no important data, and see if you get another unmountable disk using the onboard ports, as getting two in quick succession to me points to a hardware problem.

If you haven't yet you should also run a few passes of memtest.

Err yes, xfs.  I thought turl meant what filesystem was on there before I brought the drive into unRAID from windows...  :-[

Ok I clicked the format button for the unmountable drive, and that worked.  It formatted for a minute or so, and now it's part of the array again.  Excellent, hopefully it stays that way.

I did actually run memtest overnight before I installed unRAID, it passed.

If it happens again download diagnostics before rebooting.
