November 3, 200916 yr I know this questions has been asked several times but there has not been any feedback on it. Has anyone tried to put unRAID on the Via NSD7800 yet? http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=4&ved=0CBUQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.via.com.tw%2Fen%2Fproducts%2Fembedded%2Fnsd7800%2F&rct=j&q=nsd+7800+&ei=bHXwStfzCZTYsgOt-OCIBg&usg=AFQjCNF9xveCEwiWCQ2sGPdofhfHBZA_bw&sig2=P7G_hmCxasZga0PxZwP8LA Can anyone recommend a barebones 8-bay solution that they know works well? It looks as though it should work but in my searching I found that there is a possibility that the 2nd RAID controller (Marvell) may not work. Onboard RAID controller is the Via VT8251 which operates the top 4 bays Second is the Marvell 81xxx RAID controller that operates the bottom 4 bays Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to put Windows Home Server on this. Thanks!!

November 3, 200916 yr The problem with such questions is that most of us here build our own server and therefore never try out machines like this prebuilt on. If you really want to make sure something is going to work with unRAID then you are probably better off taking a look at the Hardware Compatibility Page and building your own machine. It is not overly difficult and can be substantially cheaper.
June 23, 201016 yr Hi, I'm new here and to unRAID. I too have found the NSD7800 and was wondering how you found it? if you ended up proceeding with it at all. It looks ideal and well priced too; I can not source the components and put a server together myself for cheaper at the moment. Any feedback on the NSD7800 would be very much apreciated. Many thanks
June 23, 201016 yr The only place I've come across them yet is here: http://www.e-itx.com/nsd-7800.html They have it listed at $479 + $15 for VGA port. I don't know, price seems a bit steep but i haven't really tried pricing something comparable. The VIA NSD7800 Tower Storage Barebone Server System Features: - VIA C7-D 1.5Ghz Carbon Free Embedded Processor - Compact Desktop Tower Design - 5.91"(W) x 13.39"(H) x 13.39"(D) - Supports one VIA VT6130 PCIe Gigabit Ethernet - Supports one Bootable Compact Flash Slot - Supports eight SATA-II (3Gbps) 3.5" SATA Removable HDD - Supports four USB 2.0 ports - FCC and CE Certified Motherboard, CPU, 1GB DDR2 Memory, HDD Trays and all internal cables in the VIA NSD7800 Barebone Storage Server are pre-assembled from factory.
June 23, 201016 yr Found a review of it running WHS - http://www.missingremote.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3979&Itemid=1&limit=1&limitstart=4
June 23, 201016 yr I like the design. I'm not fond of the support for this platform. If you can't get this everywhere, there may be trouble supporting it later. In addition, there is currently no guarantee that the platform will work with unRAID. I had a recent surprise when testing my Thecus 5200BR with unRAID. Sure enough, unRAID did not support the Celeron processor in the Thecus. I had to recompile the kernel. So unless you are a seasoned linux admin, this platform may not be the best choice. It's important to consider part replacement later on. Take a peek at Queeg's tiny ten it might be a way to go. heh.
June 23, 201016 yr Thanks for your responses; much appreciated. I found NSD7800 at an eBay store and it caught my eye. I used to build basic systems years ago and have no idea when it comes to Linux so thought I'd be better purchasing a unit. I have been trying to get a response from Lime-Tech regarding either of their systems but no answers... I could just bite the bullet and build .
