Trouble with Replacing Failed Disk

Featured Replies

I may be dealing with multiple issues, but here is what happened:

[*]Before my current problem: In the past I've had an issue with my aging flash drive.  I'm replacing very soon, but I'm pretty sure it is failing because sometimes I have to reboot a few times before UnRAID will finish loading.

[*]The other day the Plex Server stopped responding so I checked on the UnRAID web interface and saw that my parity drive was red (other 2 drives and flash were green - see screenshot).  I also noticed it detected errors on all 3 HDDs.  So I stopped the server to take it offline.

[*]My web interface then showed all of the devices as empty (no disk detected).  I wasn't sure what to make of this so I just grabbed my log files, shut down the server, and ordered a replacement drive for my parity.

[*]I replaced my parity drive (sdb I believe) and tried to boot it up, but it would not boot.  It would get to the UnRAID boot menu (normal, safemode, memtest).  If I selected either normal or safe mode it would start to load the "bzimage" and would get through all of the loading dots but when it finally said "ready" it never continued in the boot sequence and just got stuck.

[*]I tried to transfer my flash drive to another flash drive, but it didn't work (I didn't pursue this any further so this could still be an option for me).  So I tried plugging in the original flash drive one more time and this time I got to the UnRAID boot menu, selected safe mode and this time it got past the "ready" screen and continued to load.

[*]It loads until it gets to the part of the startup sequence where it is looking at the HDDs.  I'll upload a screenshot in the next post.

[*]I turned it off and on a few times, but it never gets past this part of the startup sequence

Any ideas what is going on?  I've attached my log file (taken from the settings tab) which I grabbed after I took the server offline but before the drive replacement.  I truncated the file to only show Feb 3rd (when the errors occured).  At the end of the Server Log file I've attached more log data from taken from the "log" button on the main tab, but it is clearly delineated at the end of the file.

I couldn't post the entire screenshot (forum restrictions to file size) but these are the last few lines...

Hold it.... I let it sit at that "stuck" screen for a long time and eventually it booted!  I'm now running a parity sync.  I'll let you know if anything goes bad.  If the worst comes I have everything backed up to CrashPlan.

The parity sync worked, all drives are green.  I was in safe mode so I rebooted to normal mode and it did get stuck at the same spot, but it eventually got through.  When it does eventually get to the "Tower login:", instead of just waiting there at that prompt, it then shows a message:

Tower login:
udevadm settle - timeout of 180 seconds reached, the event queue contains:
/sys/devices/pci0000:00:13.0/usb5/5-0:1.0 (782)

Any idea what that message means?

Have you tried a different USB port for you flash?

Yes, I just tried it because my server crashed overnight, not sure why.  It's running again now.  When I tried the new slot it still gave me a problem once and worked on the second attempt.  Also, I ran memtest and that came out fine.

My new flash drive arrives today.  I'm planning on upgrading to v6, but should I first get v5 up and running on the new flash drive and THEN update to v6?  What are the instructions for replacing a "failed" flash drive (I'm currently using the free version of v5)?  I found these instructions but it only talks about how to put the latest version of UnRAID on the flash drive:

http://lime-technology.com/unraid-server-installation/

Do I just follow these instructions, then delete the contents and then copy the contents of my current flash drive?

I would get everything working before trying to upgrade, then see this wiki:

Upgrading to UnRAID v6

Thanks, I eventually got it working.  I think my problems are a bit deeper than I originally hoped and will require gutting my internal hardware for some new equipment (system was built in 2010).  I think these problems (possibly failing MB/CPU/ or PSU) were causing my symptoms.

I need some further advice.  Like I said before, I got the server running.  The parity check finished and everything seemed ok.  Even so, I knew there were some hardware problems so I decided to build a new server.  Then, overnight my server crashed again.  I decided to unplug it and just leave it until my new server is built.  I will have all of my parts in a few days, but I'm not sure what to do first.  Should I somehow try to get my old server running again, then do a clean shutdown and then the upgrade to v6?  Or can I just go ahead and do the upgrade without my old server...  Keep in mind I'm reusing my old case so once I upgrade to the new server I can't really go back to the old hardware...

Also, if I just use the free trial of v6 and everything works, how hard is it to upgrade the license?

FYI, this is the build I decided to go with: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/7ZQG7P

Probably nothing really to be gained by getting the old one back now that you have parity. Since it did crash you should treat it as an unclean shutdown when you get the new server built and do a correcting parity check. Probably unRAID will anyway assuming you use the config/super.dat file that has your drive assignments since that is where the running/stopped status is also stored.

Thanks, yeah nothing should have been being written to the disk when the computer failed so I wouldn't expect any differences with parity.  I'll just make sure to run a parity check ASAP.  Also, everything is backed up with CrashPlan.

Do you happen to know of a way to have CrashPlan tell you if any files are missing/different than the backup up version before CrashPlan runs (because in this case I'd trust the version on CrashPlan servers more)?

I got my new hardware in today.  I just set it up and I think what I'm going to do is get v5 back up and running, perform a parity check and then upgrade to v6.

However, I'm currently dealing with a problem where my new hardware won't boot up.  I get power, fans spin and lights turn on, but no boot text on the screen.  After about 10 seconds the power cuts off and then turns back on and repeats until I pull the power cord...

Do you have a speaker on the system as sometimes you can get beeps if the system cannot post.  I would carefully check that the RAM is properly seated.  Also the system switching itself off might be due to the CPU fan not being properly installed?

You could of course simply have defective hardware - if so it could be anything at fault.

I now have booted into UnRAID on my new machine.  On the connected monitor I can see the "tower login" prompt, but for some reason I cannot get the web interface to work.  Currently I do not have any HDDs connected to the MB.  I just want to see that UnRAID is working and then I'll plug in the HDDs and do the configuration changes necessary.  Usually when I have this problem I just reboot my router, switch, and server and sometimes my desktop PC too and then I can access the web interface again.  This time that isn't working.  I've tried rebooting the server twice, but can't seem to connect to it via web...

Have you tried connecting to it by IP instead of name? Can you ping or telnet?

Looking at my routers interface, the server wasn't listed, so on the UnRAID server I ran:

ifconfig eth0

I got a message saying: error fetching interface information: device not found

When running

ifconfig

it gives more info and says that 8 TX and 8 RX packets had errors.  So it seem like the server isn't connecting with the router.  However, I noticed that after the server is connected for a little while the lights on my switch actually do change to 2 green lights (meaning 1Gbps) but the lights on the server itself remain red/orange.
