Parity is failed - need to swap non-parity drive with new one

Featured Replies

Parity drive = 4 tb seagate NAS drive

Other drives: another 4 TB seagate drive, and multiple 2 TB drives.

My parity Drive has failed. bad drive.

I bought a new WD 4TB drive, but it will not let me assign it to parity, it says it has to be the largest disk, i can only assume it is not quite the size of the 4 tb seagate.

So, is there a way swap the data on the non-parity 4 tb seagate with the new WD 4 TB seagate, then i can use that seagate drive as my parity?

Basically I need to upgrade a disk without using parity drive because it has failed.

I cannot see any sensible way to do what you suggest unless you have enough spare space to copy all the data off the Seagate 4TB drive.  If you can do that then you could do a Tools->New Config' after clearing the Seagate drive and reassign the drives as you want them to end up. and then rebuild parity from the data drives.

Another approach that does not need spare space but leaves you running unprotected for some time is:

  • add the new drive as an additional data drive
  • copy all the data from the seagate 4TB to the WD 4TB
  • Do a 'Tools->New Config' and reassign the drives as required (i.e. with the cleared Seagate as parity) and then rebuild parity from the data disks.

A final option would be to get an additional drive that is definitely large enough (e.g. 5TB, 6TB or 8TB) to use as the new parity drive and then use both 4TB drives as data drives.

Does the WD 4TB drive have an HPA on it?

Couple good ideas @Itimpi, thank you. I think i would be okay running unprotected for a short period to copy data.

@gundamguy, i am not sure if it has HPA, is there an easy way to check?

You can check for HPA's by using the

hdparm -N [device]

command in terminal. You just have to specify the device like sda or sdb of whatever disk you want to check.

hdparm -N /dev/sdf

/dev/sdf:

READ_NATIVE_MAX_ADDRESS_EXT failed: Input/output error

hdparm -N /dev/sdf

/dev/sdf:

READ_NATIVE_MAX_ADDRESS_EXT failed: Input/output error

Huh, someone else had that issue earlier as well. I'm not sure what that means.

Some controllers don't support that command, try different one, onboard usually works.
