Par2 Script/Plugin or other Bitrot Fix Ideas

Featured Replies

I've been away in FreeNAS ZFS land but want to migrate some data back to Unraid.  The only thing I feel I don't have a good understanding on is how to protect against bitrot.  Unraid makes replacing a failing disk easy, but for actual file corruption, I've heard a few people through out par 2.  I'm familiar with par2, but is there a plugin or script to make it generate parity files automatic?  Maybe at a directory level?  I'd target something like ~5%.  Any other strategies to combat bitrot short of another complete backup of the data that I'm missing?

Thanks

The only catch is that this plugin has been depreciated because of the Dynamix File Integrity plugin (which doesn't have the option for Par2).

Also why 5%? That seems like a bit of over kill for bitrot (which should by it's nature be exceedingly rare)

Author says it's abandoned but I am still using it. I haven't really tested the par2 functionality.

I use multipar for windows, there are scripts available to do folders and subfolders with one click, it’s for windows but since I create my pars on my desktop because it’s much faster it’s ok for me.

Thanks, I'll read up on it.  If it's depreciated though, it makes me feel that it's not a good time to use that option.  You're right, probably more in the line of 2-3% redundancy.

So do you create pars before adding files to storage?  I could probably do this and just use a batch script to create them for my existing folders.  Probably have a lot more network overhead this way, but it should work.

I guess I should clarify some, it's entirely functional, but development was halted and won't continue so any issues you might have aren't going to get fixed...

That said, it is functional.

Yes, e.g., when I have a complete season of a tv show on my download server I move it to my desktop, create pars for the entire folder and move it to my archive server.

When I started creating pars I already had a lot of media, pars for those were created over gigabit on a desktop i5, it was still faster than using my unraid servers, naturally this will vary based on your CPUs, my archive servers have low end CPUs, mostly Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge Celerons.
