Upgrading cache ssd drive to a larger ssd!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Can any one advise on the best/quickest method of upgrading my cache drive? I currently have a single 250GB ssd (btrfs) as my cache drive but have two 500GB ssd arriving today. What I would like to do is move all the current data from the 250GB drive to one of the 500GB drives then add the second 500GB drive as a mirror! I know I can probably image the data from the old drive to the new but thought there maybe a better way of doing this within unraid itself. I have already found an old thread that recommends moving the cache data to the HDD's then installing the new 500GB ssd, copying the data back to the new 500GB ssd then running some permissions commands from the CLI. is there a better, safer, quicker method?

Many Thanks in advance.

Regards

Sarf.

-backup cache just in case

-add both 500GB SSDs to the cache pool

-start array and wait for cache to balance, this can take a while depending on data, you can see the progress on the cache webpage

-when balance is done power down server and physically disconnect the old cache SSD, it's not enough to unassign it

-start array for cache to balance with both remaining SSDs.

Followed your steps above with the exception of having all three ssd's connected at once due to limited sata ports! I have however managed to replace the 250gb ssd with two 500gb ssd's in raid-1 default config.

The problem I have now is that the web GUI always reports "No balance found on '/mnt/cache'". I am pretty sure this has happened due to me first adding a single 500gb ssd alongside the 250gb ssd, waiting for them to balance, then removing the 250gb ssd and adding the second 500gb ssd in the slot that was being used by the old 250gb ssd. I then simply added the 500GB drive to the cache pool, it then balanced but now continually reports the error above. It all seems to be working and I can access my cache no problem but I would like to fix this so it reports correctly. Maybe there is a way to force remove the old drive from the system? My research hasn't revealed anything so far and hence my request here. Any advice or help would be much appreciated!

Sarf.

P.S.

I didn't un-assign the 250gb ssd before replacing it either. I know, it's my own fault but I would still like to fix it if possible without reinstalling the 250gb drive which I no longer have :(

That is normal, except for the initial balance when changing config, it always displays no balance found.

Why is that? I've also found this to be confusing.

I suppose it's how btrfs pool works, agree that it's confusing when using more than one device, but that's the way it is.

what's the proper method to backup the cache?

how does balancing the cache move all the files off of the ssd drive you want to remove?

by the cache page, is that the main tab?

thank you!

Depends on what you have there and what you want to do.

is this considered the preferred method?

Yes, it's also on the FAQ I linked above.
