How does dual parity work?

Featured Replies

Just curious about the current implementation of dual parity in the current 6.2 beta.

I understand how single parity works, but no clear on the dual parity setup. Lets say a single drive fails, its replaced and is rebuilding, then another drive fails, so it is also replaced and rebuilding of that drive begins too? Does this occur simultaneously? Are data rebuild (replacing a drive with a larger one) times the same or longer with dual parity? What happens with a parity drive fails in a dual parity setup?

Dual parity builds and checks seem to be nearly the same as single parity.

2nd  failed disk would disable, you would have to cancel current rebuild, replace failed disk (or unassig and reassign same disk) and re-start array to rebuild both.

Same, unless there's a controller bottleneck on the server, or you have a CPU limited parity check, dual parity needs a little more CPU power.

Until you replace it you are only protected for a single disk failure.
