May 10, 201610 yr Just recently discovered Unraid, and decided it would be a fun father/son project to build a new server to replace an aging(and full) Readynas NV+. The parts list I chose are as follows. Asrock A88M-G/3.1 motherboard, AMD A10-7860K processor, 16GB DDR3 Ram, 240GB SSD, Fractal Node 804 case, EVGA P2 650 power supply, and 2 additional 3TB HDDs to add to my existing drives that currently occupy the Readynas. Please note that I built this as a function of cost and what was available at my local MicroCenter store. Total cost was under 600 with price matching, and that keeps my wife from griping to much as compared to other off the shelf products. My 16yo son built the new server and it works beautifully right outta the gate. (Im an older guy so I found that to be fasinating in its own right) I look forward to learning what Unraid 6 can do and am open to suggestions on how to set up, and what Docker Apps to install. I will say upfront to please forgive me for some questions I may ask on here, as I am not a network specialist nor a computer guru by any way shape or form. currently running the trial version with 27 days left, just so you get an idea of how new to Unraid I am. Thanks in advance guys and gals and I really do look forward to this new learning experience.
May 10, 201610 yr As to what docker apps to install start by installing the community applications plugin and explore the apps tab There is also a new plugin fix common problems which will point out any issues that it finds with your setup. May 10, 201610 yr I think my advice would be to take things slowly. Get the core file server system set up and installed and confirm it's working before tackling docker and VMs. Read around each subtopic before tackling it. I think it's a wonderful idea to do it with your son, I only hope that if my wife and I have children then I get the opportunity to do the same. One more thing, if you need help, post here, read the stickies and try and post in the proper place and always include as much information as you can. It really really helps... EDIT: Sorry, how rude of me, welcome! It's a friendly place and the community is awesome. You'll like it here.
