Plex and Media on different Unraid builds

Featured Replies

Assume you have two Unraid builds on the same LAN -- would running PLEX on unraid 1 while the media is on unraid 2 work?

I assume yes since LAN speeds are greater than HD speeds but after a great first build I'm making a lot of mistakes with build #2 so I figured I would ask.

Yes works no problems  use unassigned devices to mount the shares

this is not actually true!  You need to remember that LAN speeds are normally quoted in bits per second,  while disk speeds are quoted in bytes per second.  Also LANs tend to have higher latency and more overheads at the interface level compared to disk interfaces.

Thanks.

I bought a bunch of uncompatiable hardware -- so my second build is actually going to turn into a 2nd and 3rd build --- to make it work with what I bought plus what I have around that isn't being used the bulk of the storage will be on a unraid that only has a passmark in the 3000s and the unraid with a passkamrk of 9000+ will have a relatively small amount of storage (3-4TB).

can you not just run Plex on unraid 2? what are the specs of each build? what stopping you having the larger array on the high power kit?

The highpower kit is an older workstation that I bought refurbished -- it has a strange issue that it won't accept most SATA III drives. I had never heard of this issue -- I just have always thought as long as it has SATA II then SATA III drives will just work at the reduced speed. Apparently not the case. I haven't tested by drives but pretty much 99% chance they don't work. So on this machine I'm limited to SATA II drives or I need a controller card which is an option.

I also didn't realize how tight the case is. I was hoping for a 5 drive build that I could expand in the future. The case would accept 5 drives if I buy a 2 to 3 cage for it but that is the max. I'm looking at options for external enclosures and eSATA but given how badly I screwed this up getting into more things I don't understand well is probably not advisable

Running Plex on the proposed third build world be an option but passmark is 3030 and I believe that is the bare minimum to stream HD1080p. It is uncommon that I'd have two streams going but sometimes it happens. Plus I'd like to have a little more safety room
