Thanks for posting this aiden - i got one, and am very pleased. Retail packaging was a nice improvement over the bare drives i had been getting from newegg. Smart showed no errors thru a full pre_clear run, and it is now acting as my new parity drive. would buy more at the same price when they next appear.

What kind of parity calc performance are you getting? (and what were you getting before putting this drive in?)

dunno what i was getting before. I'll do a parity check late this week (after running for several days) and post here.

I've got 3 of these (1 parity and 2 data) with 3 more in waiting.  One drive with only about 60 hrs started having errors and I negotiated a free replacement with Seagate customer service because of the bubble wrap pack from Newegg.  I can't imagine they weren't aware of it though since the Newegg reviews are riddled with complaints over the packaging.  Anyway, I think my last parity check was between 75-80 MB/sec but I'll see when I get home if I can confirm it.

Newegg and Amazon for some reason love shipping bare drives almost loose in a box.  That's why I've started watching the local guys for deals, like Fry's and BB, where I can get a retail kit where the manufacturer has actually package the drive.  And Seagate only gives their 5 year warranty on the boxed versions anyway, as far as I know.

Sorry, i don't have a previous log with the 7200 drive, but my recheck yesterday gave these results: time=31942sec rate=61158K/sec (the drive is currently plugged into a PCIe controller (Adaptec 4x), not mobo)

Ran check yesterday, after moving parity to mobo (otherwise array is the same): time=29833sec rate=65481K/sec

  • 4 weeks later...

I finally ran another parity check but in the meantime I added 3 more of the 2TB drives as well as an Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 1TB drive.  All drives are connected to the Asus P5Q Premium MB but 2 of them are in the goofy SATA ports setup for RAID and backup.

Parity results below:

Tower kernel: md: sync done. time=26771sec rate=72971K/sec
