Question about cache pool and cache drives

Featured Replies

New user considering unRAID so if I'm wrong please tell me. From what I understand, if I add multiple drives as cache, they are all combined into btrfs RAID1 which basically halves the usable space and the system manages the rest.

Can I manage the cache pool manually? e.g. lets say I have 2 ssd's and 2 hdd's - I want to keep the ssd for VM storage, and use the hdd for all other cache duties, temp drive etc.

But this isn't possible in unRAID is it?

Not possible, maybe in the future if btrfs implements SSD tiering.

What users do now is use the Unassigned Devices plugin to mount additional drives.

After mounting a drive outside the pool, it can still be used as a path in the UI? e.g. in the settings for dockers, shares etc? If so this solves the problem.

Yes for dockers, with the caveat that there may be timing issues. UD doesn't get mounted quickly enough sometimes. User shares, no. Only array devices and cache pool participate in the user share system. However... you can share the contents as a separate SMB share.
