how much power do I need?

Featured Replies

hey guys,

just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to do the numbers for me

this is what is is going to be in the rig:

- 3x 3TB WD RED

- 1x 1.5TB WD GREEN

- 2x SSD

- i7-3770 CPU

- 4x4GB DDR3 RAM

- NVIDIA gforce 970 for GPU (if I can get the pass through work)

should I be able to run this on a 420W PSU or do I need more power?

thanks for the input

It's not even close -- the answer is NO.

The video card alone recommends a minimum of a 500w power supply; and with 4 hard drives, 16GB of RAM, and an i7 you want to be well above that.

I'd go with a high-quality 650w 80+ Gold power supply.

Might be a bit close.. check here.. http://powersupplycalculator.net/

thanks for the link!

according to that I should be OK with a 420W with a 74W idle and 300W under load.

I would still spec it a bit bigger.. it always good to have some reserve and wont limit your future upgrades as much..

Mine draws 220-250w under load and I have a 610W PS

what's your CPU? How much does it draw on idle?

All my system specs are in my signature..

While your system likely won't draw over 450w, it could come close ... and it's never a good idea to run a power supply near it's maximum capacity.    Primarily because the power available on the different rails is not a linear function -- so while you may have enough power in terms of overall wattage, you may not have enough current capacity on one of the rails (e.g. the 12v or 5v draw may exceed the specifications).

nVidia factors this in when suggesting minimum power supply ratings for their various cards ... and as I noted above, for the GTX 970 you plan to use their specifications show "Recommended System Power: 500w"  [ http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-970/specifications ]

... and to be conservative, it's always a good idea to have a PSU that's somewhat above that minimum recommendation.
