How to preclear

Featured Replies

I used to use a free version of unraid on a separate PC to preclear my drives for Unraid, but there isn't a free version any more to do this.

What is the procedure to preclear a drive before I add it to my array now?

You don't need a license to preclear, only to start the array. Just use the latest version and preclear like you've always done in the past.

Oh ok, cool I can do that then.

Any chance this functionality is built into unraid yet?

Yes and no. The original purpose of preclear is no longer needed, adding a new drive no longer keeps the array unavailable during the clearing process.

However... the extensive testing that preclear does is still not a built in function.

So, if your intent is to keep the array operational while adding a new drive to an already parity protected array, then preclear is not needed. If your intent is to test the drive, preclear is still a good option.

I like to run a few cycles to stress test the drive before putting in my array so I will do this outside my main server.

Thank you!

Just so you're aware, you can use the Unassigned Devices plugin to mount, format and preclear drives outside of your array. Very handy plugin in other ways as well.
