I plan on going over to Frys tomorrow to pick one of these up for my parity drive.  Will it be as fast or faster than the Seagate 1.5 7200 that I have now.

I can't answer that because I have no experience with the 1.5 TB Seagates.

I bought one of these last night. Good price..

I can't tell if the noise levels pertain to this drive. Is it noisy or fairly quiet? ie, I have an older 400GB Hitachi drive and it was noisy as all heck.

It's probably like with the other manufacturers.  Some are noisy, some are not, depending on the time of day and the robot that assembled, etc, blah blah.  The two Hitachi 2TB drives that I have are quiet.  Others on Newegg say they are noisy and quiet, hot and cool, etc.  I guess what I'm saying is, ymmv.

I'll let you know when I get it. It shipped today. I should have it in a couple of days..

Well, they're usually by specific model right? ie, The Datasheet on my Seagate 1.5TB is something like 29dBA whereas one of the 500GB Seagates I have is something like 39dBA. I can't tell with this model. ie, My laptop Hitachi drives were whisper quiet.

I didn't find the specs for this model.

I received the new Hitachi drive last night. It is just as quite as the WD Green EADS 2TB drive I just installed. The temps are similar also:

WD 2TB 34C

Hitachi 2TB 33C

Both drives are in a CoolerMaster 4in3 cage with the 120mm fan on the front. The WD drive is in the top slot & the Hitachi is in the slot right below. I am highly impressed as the Hitachi is a 7200rpm drive. I will buy more of these..

Thanks! I'm seriously considering buying one or two now :).

If you do buy the Hitachi, let us know how your drives run. Whether they are quite & if they run cool. Hopefully I didn't just get a good one..  :D

Note that this is a 5 platter drive vs the 4 platter drives used by Seagate and WD.  From what I have read, Hitachi had to stick with their older technology when they launched their 2TB drive.  This will result in lower average transfer performance, access time and higher power consumption than an identical drive with 4.  The price is right, however and I believe it will outperform other 2TB options in this price range.

HD Bench results seem to indicate average read/write throughput around 100MB/s.  This is about 10% slower than the 2TB Black drive (about twice the price) and about 17% faster than the Caviar Green 2TB that can be had in this price range.

Idle power consumption is about twice as high on the Hitachi as the WD Green though.  7.5W vs 3.7W.

I have 2 of these drives in my server and they are running great, much better then the seagates frankly.  I had another Seagate drive shit a brick on me the beginning of the week, which took down my entire server and another drive with it.  I have to send yet another seagate back to have it exchanged... this is getting very old.

Anyway, the hitachi's are running at 36C and 38C right now during a parity check which is about 4C cooler then the Seagate drives in the system. The Hitachi's are only marginally warmer (usually 1-2C) then the WD in the system.

If I had to buy more drives right now I would probably go with the Hitachi or WD drives at this point (maybe Samsung as I have one of those but the temp does not seem to be reporting correctly; 24C right now during parity check, which seems absurd considering the rest of the drives).
