Upgraded to 6.2.3, drive mounted read only

Featured Replies

My disk3 has had a yellow warning triangle on the dashboard for a while - there are 8 reallocated sectors. This was pointed out to me by the nice new (to 6.x) webGUI, and I've known about it since my update to 6.1.9 about 2 months ago. I've been in the process of migrating my drives to xfs, and as soon as I got to the point where I could do drive3, I was going to retire it.

After finishing the xfs conversion of drive5, I installed the update to v 6.2.3 that's been pending for a couple of days. When I rebooted, it seems that unRAID decided to mount disk3 read only. It's still got the same 8 reallocated sectors it's had for a while, and there are no pending reallocations.

The disk has been spinning for nearly 8 years now, so it's definitely time for retirement, but I wasn't quite ready to do so, and if I have to move data off of it now, it will make the xfs conversion of my remaining drives a bit more of a juggling act.

'Main' is reporting that there are 0 bytes free (don't know if that's because it's read-only), but free space on the drive is in very short supply, so it's unlikely that anything else would be written to it in the normal course of action anyway.

I'm attaching the diagnostics.zip, and I'm happy to supply any other info needed.

  • Do I need to get data off this disk immediately, if not sooner?
  • Does it appear that it might be safe to let it ride a little longer?
    • It will take a couple of days to move data off my 3TB disk10 and reformat it, then I can easily get all the other 1 & 2TB drives handled with the space I currently have available.
    • I realize that the best anyone can give me is an educated guess, and won't hold it against anyone if they recommend letting it run and the drive dies - we're all human

[*]Should I just reboot and see if the server will bring the drive up read-write?

[*]Would it be at all helpful to run the extended SMART report, or will that just add unnecessary stress to an already tired disk?

Disk is not mounted read only, it does have 0 bytes free, so you can't write anymore.

Make sure you setup notifications if you haven't already, then it can email you if you have more problems in the future. There have been several users who failed to take advantage of this feature and didn't know they had multiple disk problems until it was too late.

I've got email & Pushover notifications on, too. I was quite well aware of the reallocated sectors, and I saw the read-only pop-up from FCP, as well as getting the email and Pushover notification of the full disk issue almost immediately after the reboot.

I've just been putting off the disk retirement while I've sorted through some other issues.

I do appreciate the reminder, though. As you say, not everyone notices these things in time.
