Southbridge Chip Support

Featured Replies

Hi Tom, does this upgrade address the problem wth support for the the southbridge chip?  My MB has a chiipset Type: Intel 945PL, Intel ICH7 and parity takes 3 days.

DD, I'm currently using a 945GZ with ICH7 on 3.0 with good results.  3 500GB SATA IIs take about 2 hours.  I had to set my mobo's SATA option to "Enhanced" to get the reasonable parity speed...60,000+ MB/sec versus about 1,000 MB/sec on all the other settings.

I figure this is as good a spot as any to ask about ICH8 support. I was under the impression that the 2.6 kernel supports ICH8 but, much to my disappointment, 4.0 is still unable to see my onboard PATA and SATA controllers. I am using the Intel DG965RY board. If there is something that I am missing to enable onboard controller support though unRAID, I would appreciate any help. I have tried every conceivable BIOS setting option available and still no go.

Musicman,

as per this thread, http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=430.0, Tom indicated there was a problem with support for the southbridge chip.  I'll double check the SATA option for enhanced but I don't recall having that option on my mb.

ICH8 should work, but we don't have a m/b with it in house at the moment.  One thing you can try, is edit your syslinux.cfg file and edit this line:

append initrd=bzroot rootdelay=10

to read:

append initrd=bzroot rootdelay=10 all-generic-ide irqpoll pci=nommconf

Post back if this makes any difference.

Thanks for your reply. I tried the boot parameters you suggested and it is still is a no go. After further research it looks like there is a known issue with the Marvell PATA controller that is being used on the Intel G965 boards. Some sites suggest that simply compiling the kernel with the Marvell package from the development branch fixes this issue.  Is this package in the current unRAID image?

Thanks for the help.

Well I upgraded to 4.0 beta 4 and I am happy to report my parity is back up to 16,000 KB/sec compared to the 1,000 I was getting.  Great work Tom!  Thanks!  Now onlly if my new Home Theatre Speakers would arrive, which I ordered 4 weeks ago, maybe I could start watching some movies again.
