Power Failure takes out Power Supply - even behind a UPS?

Featured Replies

My server is (*or was intended to be*) protected behind an APC 1500 Watt UPS (sever plugged into 'master' plug).  I have the UPS plugin installed and its been working fine (check it every now and then).

Last night we had high winds which took out our power for a couple of hours.  I was not home when the hit happened.  My wife said it was one of those "off/on/off/on" power failures (tree hit lines).  When I got home, the server was off (not sure it shut down).  I turned everything off and waited for power to return.  I was also not home when the power returned.

When I returned home after the power was restored, I turned the UPS back on and then powered up the server.  All I get is a 'quivering' server (Mobo lights on, some fans spinning, power light/switch flickering).  I unplugged the power cord and waited overnight, but same results.

I'm hoping this is only the power supply and I'm also hoping that unRaid did a clean shutdown when the power outage happened.

So I'm off to get a replacement power supply.  My question is when I replace the power supply, should there be any proper procedure I should go through?

Has anyone had a power supply fail behind a UPS?  I've never seen that happen before...

There is procedure that I am aware of, this just sounds like the power supply might have been on its last legs. Is your APC a Smart UPS or BackUPS? I use SmartUPS APC's and have zero issues with them.

I recently had a surge wipe out an htpc, AV receiver, cable box, tv, etc. all protected by a UPS. This surge also wiped out the UPS itself. If yours is still functioning then the problem may just be a failed power supply.

What brand of UPS was that ?

What brand of UPS was that ?

Mine was an APC Back UPS.
